Sym's new ult a result of lazy design?

Unfortunately this game became all about shields and paralysing opponents. And they change sym every year, which is yeah bad design all over… But this new one wins the big price of “worst design of the century”. Also sym rework became like a surprise egg, let’s see what happens to sym next year  But they hit the bottom with this one already I do not think they can make it any worse from this point.

Why exactly is the new rework the “worst design of the century”?

It’s a rather bold claim.

One thought here is being aware of the potential for enemy ults which offset yours is in order … I mean, that kind of thing happens with ults all the time, you have to plan. Try being Mei and having a D.va eat your Blizzard ult without even using an ult or having to really aim…

That’s because it’s how game designers unfortunately still respond to people becoming too good at playing their games. Make people lose control of their characters and/or lock them out of their abilities. There will be much more of that coming, and if you look at the hamster and how people are getting tossed around, it goes into that direction.

Then in the next wave there will characters having and granting immunities to those effects, kinda like Orisa has already for herself now.

And so it goes round and round…

Ghostcrawler once explained those things when he was still doing WoW blogs, and if you’ve been part of WoW history, you should remember how the game went from a rogue stunlock and a warlock fear as the worst things to worry about to having more or less a seperate UI for having lost control of your character.

Sucks, but that’s how it goes…

we dont need balancing guys, we need new heroes/altered heroes and new maps that are completely useless and barely add positive stuff to the game. what is the point of more choke maps like blizz world? seriously dont understand that. what is the point of the new sym? seriously dont understand that. and this new sym is coming to comp? lol

whoever thought the new sym was a good idea, needs to get fired. whoever thought that hamster character is a good idea, dito.

just like every other developper out there, blizzard ruins more with every single patch/update, than they do good. and people praise these guys? soon comp will be overbroken and no one will play again.

Let me clarify that you haven’t noticed a pattern in the new characters:
They work around one unique gimmick

Ana is a healing sniper
Orisa can throw shields and stop people
Doomfist can punch
Sombra can hack
Brigitte can flick a flail pretty fast
Hammon can wreck enemies
Moria can steal life and give it to others

Each time, they try to make a unique character with unique mechanics. They don’t want new heroes to be similar to others because it would make the game grey and monotone.

They make new and unique heroes to keep the game interesting.

So how about we go back to the main issue about what’s wrong with the redesign of Symmetra. And let’s start with the following question:

Why exactly should someone get fired for thinking the rework is a good idea? What exactly makes Symmetra’s rework terrible?

so they should instead make new op heroes that are gonna get nerfed, then buffed, then nerfed, then buffed only to be nerfed again? stop defending the horrible development of this game.

rework a good idea? sym was perfect the way she was. now all sym has to do is spam turrets. ‘‘good rework’’. ok

Nope, I never said that.

All I did was debunking your argument because it was a moot point.

Symmetra’s ult isn’t “lazy design” because Blizzard is a “terrible developer”
Symmetra’s ult seems to be “lazy design” because for other reasons.

And if you have read my last questions:

I was asking for your opinion about her redesign and what exactly in her was flawed. I never picked a side here but tried to be analytical.

Yet I have to rephrase the question: Why is her ult bad design?
This topic is about her ult, after all.

I personally don’t think it’s bad design per se because it is just a glorified shield protector. Then using the ult, the player usually focuses the “protection zone” on a tiny area, not on the whole map.

Generally, all but some ults (like Zarya’s ult) could be considered “lazy design”

Something that I find bothersome is the shield’s HP, it seems to be way too high. I only saw it break with a Sombra ult.

Not every graviton has a dragon strike follow up.

Sym’s new wall ult won’t lose me any sleep. It’s a hindrance at most. I’m sure all Zarya players will get by just like if an enemy Mei uses her wall to defend her entire team caught in a grav, and how it can save their lives and block a lot of incoming damage, making the Zarya and her team have to reposition quickly before the grav is over, similarly this Sym wall will do somewhat the same thing. It’s just another annoying barrier in Overwatch, and honestly I don’t see this barrier/shield element ever going away. it’s just a part of the game I have to accept and work around, because Overwatch is like a game of puzzles, there should be a reaction for every action, which is why the community sets ablaze whenever there are heroes or abilities with no clear counters.

Sometimes it’s nice to play something like Quake Champions or Battlefield 4, with no barriers, very little action stoppers (stuns, traps, etc) and the action is just fast and free flowing. Then I play Overwatch and it’s like a game of chess disguised as a cartoony looking game. There are more decisions involved in a game of Overwatch at times than a game of Battlefield 4 and I’m not even joking. Overwatch is a lot more complex than people think.

Yep, that’s why I love it, it’s much more complex and not as much on how you are aiming. It lets many different skill types compete with each other.

He was talking about grav/hanzo and let’s be real here, it is mostly a follow up.

This is what you absolutely deserve. The best ulti in the game, also super easy to use, finally has another counter.

Symmetra’s new teleporter system is %95 useless now, %5 usefulness is you do not need to walk 2 second road or climb up stairs. Old teleporter system should have been improved but not like this… Sentries are the same just an annoyance nothing else, you can simply see them flying and shoot them before they get deployed fully. Ridiculous shield is another annoyance at best, does not help much. Old sym was more useful than this one. And they removed her lock target, light ball which passed most of the shields and the shield which you could spam on corridors. Her signature and most usefull abilities are removed and lots of bad abilities came. They should have improved old ones instead of changing everything. From the games I have played (and she is in every game these days, as a new update people are trying her) she is a lot more useless now, she is just running around without helping anything. Really really bad design. As I said before, we will see the new “reworked” sym next year too. They will try to fix things but it won’t help at this point.

I don’t know what game you guys are playing. The new Sym is dominating a lot of games I’m in and I’m a lot more successful with her myself too. The teleporter is very fun and makes you think about maps in a different way, and all you need to do to make your teammates use your teleporter is prove that you will use it to gain high ground and such. The new turrets are more flexible and I enjoy the feeling of using them as an active power rather than set them up.

I’ve not quite figured out how to make the best use of her ult yet, and her primary fire is underwhelming unless you are up against Brigitte, Reinhardt or Orisa and can easily charge it up without using ammo. But all in all, so much more fun and definitely still Sym.
