The war on "toxicity" has gone too far

Hello. I want to share a story about my friend. He got muted for God knows how many months for being toxic in chat or voicechat (which is fair). But does it place him to the category of players who can be treated unjustly by the game or moderators? I’ll try to explain what I mean.

First of all, the game always tried to even the ratio of wins to losses by giving my friend bad teammates (in which “bad” stands for people who don’t do much or anything to win, while my friend have medals for gold damage, elims and etc., even on tanks, EVERY GAME, I’m not kidding!). So if he had 15 wins more than losses, then, oooh, just wait for it, here comes the big lose streak. And it doesn’t matter how hard he tries to win, it’s gonna be a loss.
And secondly, yesterday my friend got banned for 1 day. The situation was that he didn’t want to change his hero (while doing great on him, with gold medals as usual), and apparently teammates blamed their loss on his unwillingness to change and sent reports. What I get from it is that moderators didn’t even try to understand this situation and banned him just because he was already a “criminal” (muted toxic player), when actually he was one of the few (if not the only one) who actually tried hard to win, who made the biggest impact on that match. (And don’t tell me medals mean nothing, gold medal for damage means everything, it’s the great indicator of who does what in the game.) He didn’t grief, he didn’t troll-pick, I don’t understand what could’ve been the grounds for banning.

I have a feeling that the game developers think that the worst problem of Overwath is toxic players and they will make every effort to make those players’ life hell.
I’ve never had problems like his, maybe because I’m a healer main, I’m not toxic and never been muted. That, I think, adds to my point.

upd: I’m just stupid, my friend influenced me and my view on things too much… Still I think this thread is useful because of many good arguments down there.

Toxicity is a problem with overwatch especially when i have russians in my team.(no offense i born in Tyumen.) But i never banned for not changing or not flexing in that time ever. So your friend’s story make me think it’s not that simple as he telling to you.

Also, “First of all, the game always tried to even the ratio of wins to losses by giving my friend bad teammates” thats never an issue i had an account that was %60 wr with over 100 wins last season and game never tried even ratio. loss streaks win streaks happened but ratio wasn’t hurt more than %1.

The general idea is to get in some kind of harmony with your team. It doesn’t matter if you have gold kills and the rest of your team is getting steam rolled. Your friend must work as a team.
If he wants to keep playing the hero he wants then prove to your team your not the reason for the overall bad performance.

People need to understand that the report system is automated, if enough people report you, you get punished

Overwatch is toxic cause you get nothing out of being good and doing anything positiv for the team.

Lol had the same problem untill it started giving out skins that arnt free for free baste on your “honor level” overwatch can do the same if they add lets say weapon skins or stickers worth honor points and honor level to unlock than everyone will start sucking eatchother off. At the end of everygame the players pick who gets gets honored everyone on the team can vote once for the other players if they liked there preformance. Atm the voting at the end of the game is totaly pointless.

I’ve been playing on-line games since the times of Legend of the Red Dragon and let me tell you, I can handle people calling me names or otherwise being abusive towards me on-line.

But OW is a whole, whole different breed. In response to OP I too believe that the medals are a good-ish indicator how someone performed during a game. Although you’re playing as good as you possibly can, even I completely lose my nerve @ home when I’m being singled out as the sole reason for a loss. A good example was losing Route 66 defense and constantly being harassed by our team to switch off Genji, even though I was the only one getting any frags and trying actively to harass the pushers off the cart.

But the other side of the coin is also true. If one player actively disrupts the game in any possible way (jumping off maps, not leaving the spawn, shooting at walls &c), then 99% of the time your team WILL lose, and that also makes me angry as hell.

Singling out someone who is not throwing and actually throwing the game is so infuriating, that I actually have to take long pauses from the game, a thing I have never ever had to do before OW.

I only had money for one account in my life and it’s the one I’m writing from here. If I have been silenced, I wouldn’t be able to write in forums, that’s why my friend can’t do it (not like he wants to, he doesn’t even know about my topic).
I wrote here because I feel he’s not treated fairly, I saw how good he plays with my own eyes (we are friends in real life) not only on his monitor, but when I played with him too.

Well he can always appeal to a GM, however, usually in these cases even if he’s said something bad or been toxic one time, it will count against him.

Are you saying he’s an angel all day every day? Because I doubt it.

He probably just needs to adjust the way he talks with his team online, and actually talks and is positive. I’ve been watching a lot of the streamers in the current event, and the one constant I can say is how positive in general they are. Watching QueenE is genuinely a joy, she never criticizes her team mates, is always encouraging, and she regularly adjusts to comp changes, as any person should be.

One tricks are not the issue at all, but talking down to your team mates cause you have 4 golds isn’t a positive it just means your team is struggling and you’re not helping the team to make the breakthroughs. Also GG EZ is not a positive thing to say, it’s taunting and mocking to your opponents especially those who played hard against and tried their best.

If anything this toxicity war is something we all need to recognise the behaviour in ourselves that is not our best, and how we can be better.

just because you are silenced in game does not mean you are on forums it is a different type of restriction lol ;D

This reminds me of the old csgo days when people would pretend it was their friend hacking to make a post about their friend never hacking and it was all a big mistake and if there is a way to fix this

Sounds like a very good friend. Have you decided on the type of ring you’re going to get engaged together with yet? I’m rooting for you!

he was muted already, so he couldn’t talk to his team. ofc he’s not an angel, i considered it while making this post… mute actually keeps him more focused on the game.

This is something that many claim, but Ive yet to see anyone who claims that reach even close to 2.

You dont get banned even for 11 reports. Its impossible to get banned from one game so hes got way more reports before. Also afaik the more punishments you stack on your account the more harsh the punishments will be (thats prolly how he got muted for many months). Also 1 day ban is like nothing. Wtf?

Yeah nope. Spam dmg converting to 0 kills just feed enemy healers free ults and many of the support ults are game changing. Got visor? Yeah nope we got trans so your visor get 0 value and we got huge value because now we can do aggressive push while you waste your ults.

Wouldnt also be surprised if it was ur alt that got banned. Why on earth would you make this post and do claims? Do you duo que every game? How do you know he has “all golds every game”. Only ignorant people will tell that about them selfs and I see 0 reasons why anyone would claim such BS for anyone but their huge egoistic self.

he sent me lots and lots of screenshots with medals… i don’t know, i trust him, he had no reason to lie to me.
it is kinda upsetting to see that people think that it was a story about me… i’ve never been toxic, i always try to help my team. when something goes wrong, even when i feel my teammates aren’t good, it just makes me sad, i’m never mad at anyone… :frowning:
i genuinely thought that it is not fair that my friend puts all his energy into winning, gets all those stupid medals, but it doesn’t pay off… i had to listen to him from day to day, looking at screenshots and “nod”.
i see your point now about “even 11 reports aren’t enough”, but i don’t understand still what he could’ve done to get banned, while being muted (and i believe he couldn’t grief and tell me he didn’t)…

if you ask me the war on Toxic Players hasn’t gone even nearly far enough
i recently started playing again after being absent from the game due to it’s toxic level for about 4 seasons
but instead i found that it only had increased ( many friends also tell me it’s only getting worse) and surpise surprise, it’s mostly DPS players for some reason

wow six / seven months away and nothing has changed amazing …
soo , ya imo blizz needs to crack down hard on toxicity in game
hell start perma banning maybe that helps , since IMHO Role cue isn’t going to sole anything unless that includes a Block on anything other than the role you have cosen to play and can’t be altered during a game , regardless if you go back to spawn or not
else people will pick a perfect 2,2,2 and once the game start run back to spawn ( or just die purposely (suicide) and you still end up with 5 dps and no tank or healer
but since Blizzard have stated multiple times to not want to lock you out of any hero at anytime it won’t change anything but probably make it even worse than it is now

so only plkay QP and vs AI with friends now … at least that is still fun

Sure why not. Would you screen shot your 0 medals when you do absolutely trash and send it to a friend and sya “Hey look how trash I am, I just lost a game for my team!”

Why dont you like encourage your friend to post here so I can laugh at hes “all golds every game” pointing out that he has 0.75-1.2 avg gold medals (thats pretty accurate for EVERYONE who has claimed that they get all gold every game etc. because if someone claims such BS I always check it and its most of the time below 1 and rest are slightly over 1).

How about actually learning the game then?

Well I have no idea whats hes doing because I cant even check hes stats (ie. cant prove that bs on medals). Also its usually one tricks (I dont mean 100% but like 80-90% on one hero and then few others to fill the rest of the games, Ive actually only seen 1 guy ever who has 100% game time on 1 hero, that was some serious commitment since he had to leave games in case hes hero was taken) who are toxic af yelling to team how everyone else but him should swap because he has “gold medals”. Even if he doesent then he yells that some guy is doing trash because X and Y. You dont get muted for months for no reason. You actually have to be incredibly toxic and being muted is a huge disadvantage. This is a team game after all.

But hey, you can link me hes account and prove me wrong, what are you waiting for?
ps. post picks with you in hes friend list and pics showing mute etc.

at the very least a lot more than he has told you / want you to know
and well why isn’t he posting himself or even better go fight the caim / ban
to me it seems very doubtfull he’s an innocent victim but that’s just me

hell just like cheaters and hackers they never have cheated/ hacked anything when they get caught with their hands in the cookie jar

and to me this is no different hell he’s lucky i’m not working at Blizzard as he would have gotten far more than just a one day ban

Tip: if you fight back against group of toxic ppl, they report u together. then you are the one who get penalty. so Blizzard is encouraging ppl to be more toxic.

The war on toxicity hasn’t even started yet. If your “friend” (or you) is being reported, he might deserve it.

I just had one of many matches where some dude started blaming me for the team loss, while he was the one going alone (… it was QP, giant breeding ground for toxicity). He started spamming in my team, then general chat, across different games. Problem is - toxicity spreads, and other teammates started blaming me for no reason (like, I picked Mercy, the Pharah started complaining about not having enough heals, I started litterally being on her ALL GAME LONG, still he would rant how I wasn’t on him).

You know what, this isn’t the first time it happened to me, always in QP. In ranked, people generally try to talk with their teammates and a single toxic player is quickly shut down.

Well - guess what, I was never banned even once. Sure, I stopped playing the game because of it but, upon returning, occasionally a “thanks for reporting, we banned one of your reported players” would pop up. This, in my experience, tells A LOT about how Blizzard actually looks into the matter.

Never talk back to these kind of people.
Just mute them and report them.
Don’t even talk about the mute and report.

And yes toxic players are still a problem.
Most are just kids thinking they are funny, but these days i just report/mute everything.
Like someone enters chat with : hello bitches = report + mute.
Players already are fed up with the players they have to play with each game. So small things will make them try to remove all these type of players from the game.
Overwatch is a good game, but a part of the player base just makes it bad for everyone. And the system almost forcing you to play with them.
