But what about the people who got the game late or left early? They still payed and didnt get to experience those “6 years of content”

I think the phrase required then is “tough luck”.
People need to just get over it now.
You can grind to the hero in only a week if you have nothing else to do. 2 or 3 sessions a week gets you the hero in 3 weeks, just in time for him to be unlocked in comp.
Or you can always just opt to only play comp during those few weeks that the new heroes are locked and then wait for the next one. As you can pretty instantly unlock the hero from the previous season with barely any effort.

If the game gets a new hero as OP like Sojourn, playing the hero will make a difference.
You get 20% xp boost while having the BP so for people without it will take longer to earn levels. If you play every single day for about 40 minutes to do the daily and weekly challenges, yes you will reach level 55 within 2 weeks but if you’ll miss doing daily challenges for some days it will take a little longer. My point is that I think people should be able to play the hero no matter if they join the season later or if they don’t want to play on a daily basis.
I don’t have the battle pass, nor did i play daily and i got ramattra a little before christmas from the start of the season. So i’m talking about my own experience.
You will be able to pretty instantly unlock the previous season’s hero at the start of the next season.
