Picked up the game 4 days ago. Had to watch quite a few yt vids & streams to get a somewhat basic understanding of everything that’s going on around me. It feels overwhelming with so many characters, so many abilities, who counters whom etc.
But I’m on the edge of uninstalling. Not because of the learning curve, but the apparent lack of matchmaking in QP and Arcade!?
For the past couple of days, I’ve been getting stomped. I get clueless teammates who scatter across the map and try to 1v5 the enemies. And not a single one playing support. It’s easily noticeable they’re just trying to figure out the game.
All the while, enemies have been on a different level. Flawlessly sticking together, 2 support characters, DPS mains who would farm at least 31elims on me and my team.
What’s obvious to me is: 1) clearly some of these teams were playing as a premade group.
2) Degen smurfs, toxics creepos who ruin the experience for newcomers and solely enjoy farming elims. Why hasn’t Blizzard taken concrete action against smurfing? They have access to user IP & the unique HardwareID linked to the motherboard. THEY KNOW who the smurfers are.
I originally assumed players going through the First-Time User Experience stuff would be in their own matchmaking pool, which made perfect sense. The fact that this isn’t the case is pretty startling.
tl;dr Getting rekt is part of the learning experience, but rekt by a fellow noobie or a casual player is not the same as getting demolished/not being able to leave spawn. There’s nothing to learn from an experience like that. It’s pure pain and chases away new players, who never touch OW again. You’d think Blizzard would put more effort not just to bringing in more people, but KEEPING them playing.

It has always been & here is wut i think might be useful to you.I always had those players,4 dmg mostly. At that point you need to understand these people wanna train to be a dmg master or top 500 list player in the future dmg players (jokingly).Thats their goal i think.
Thb,i never play OW1 & OW2 is my first time.
So wut i did is (i’ve unlocked all the chars),i dont care,i would counter pick & train myself too.Just incase if i feel like staying long,i would play tank.Mostly Roadhog, cuz he can regen.I played him till i can reconized all the maps, plus the medkits.Another good tank is Orisa, good survivality.
Later on,i still cant play dmg.I switch to supports.Untill i handle them good whenever theres a tank players around.
After a master abit of supports, guess whut?
There are still 4 of these dmg players around.
I’m like you too learning from youtube.
After i learned Sojourn is a meta,i gave it ablast. And i did as i think whut i would do.
Attack from ground, slide jump to the high ground controlling the crowd & so on.
And all 5 dmg on but i dont care.I kept pushing on.Sometimes we won & lose.I just dont care.
Overwatch has always had issues with smurfs and stuff of that nature, it isn’t anything new. But I will agree that for new players this game is very difficult especially due to the fact that there doesn’t seem to be anything that stops new players and old players locking horns and it is very much one sided. In every game I’ve seen a new player they get absolutely decimated which yes isn’t fair but you will learn the more you play and honestly learning through watching other people play may not be the best idea as the streamers that people go to are usually at the higher ranks and watching the game that high up and replicating what they do is very difficult.
In ow 1 the best way to learn the basics of all heroes for me was to play mystery heroes. In that mode you’re pretty much expected to be bad. I had my best doomfist play ever in one match where i killed 3 people.
If you win in that mode it’s more luck than anything else as you might just get a good comp or someone gets a hero that they’re really good at. Because sadly to combat long queue times i think the matchmaker in quick play might have been loosened up some. (Not sure if true, but it would explain a few things)
One way to learn the basics of maps is to create a custom game with invitation only joining requirement. Just pick a map, turn it into a skirmish and learn a few routes and medpacks on your own or with a good friend.
Another really good way to get familiar with maps and heroes is to play vs ai in the training mode. It might feel demeaning to some, but that’s what the mode is for.

I agree, it’s better to learn through first hand experience, watching a streamer would just be confusing as they would do things that a newer player may not understand.
I’ve never thought of streamers as a source of beginner pointers, as most of them have been playing for a good while and will require some knowledge of the basics to even understand what is going on.
Only after one has learned the basic mechanics of the game does it actually help you to watch those improvement tutorials.
Can’t run before you walk and all that.

Well,as a new players,i see there’s a goodside & badsides.liked i said earilier about Sojourn,i was doing well at start, got some solo kills but the things went cold fast.
There’s no tanks,no supports & nobody cares.Soon after some vicious kills, opposite Tracers,Genji simply counter me ez.Cuz,nobody co-op.Afew tried to help me but still failed. The whole team were simply slained. But i just play the game thru till i’m finished.Cant escape those things but i had my blast! It was good fun! "
Yeah,i’ve learned some stuffs.Getting there "XD
This is more because you are new. Well, your account not you as such.
The game is still trying to calibrate your MMR (what it uses for match making). It’ll move you about a lot and settle down as you find your place.
Can be a bit rough if you’re playing solo. So totally get why you’d bail on it. Fingers crossed it smooths out and you find some fun!
It wouldn’t make sense because you’d barely be able to find a queue most of the time
That’s why role queue exists.
This game is not welcoming to new players, never has been and you’ll struggle to find a competitive multiplayer game that is. There’s not much you can do other than find some friends to play with or turn off the chat and just get on with it sadly.
OW isnt the hostile to newbies, its the lousy inconsiderate players mostly.Try & chat with them a’lil.I would sometimes suggest to them rank playmatch settings with 1 tank,2 dmg & 2 support. If they not listening,i’ll let them struggles till the QP match is totally broke to pieces.Well not all QP players are no good,i had some, infact many who i didnt need to tell them to do those good things. We simply form up a team & won.Maybe you wanna add up those people for your play next time.

it’s pretty much every game tbh. There’s so many people like that around, it’s just something we have to put up with, sadly.

Almost EVERY competitive game is. The one thing they can do is start new players with the lowest MMR possible and even then, there’s smurfs that might trash talk anyway. Not much Blizz can do, to be honest.
