Weapon options - its evolution?

Hello everyone.

I’ve had it in my head that there is a significant area in OW that has been ignored and swept under the rug, but maybe this is a time to pick it up. With the fact that we’ve had this menu available since around the beginning (I joined months after launch, so unsure at start), we are given 1 extra option to choose - “Shall we obtain the Golden weapon?”

This could of had SO MUCH potential to change the game in development, and this has not been taken advantage of. We only get a choice of weapon changes with an entire skin change. Cosmetically, the characters could have a huge range of options to make their hero that little more unique and fun to play as.

Some changes could of been:

  1. More colour palettes. Monochrome, Pastels, Neon, Flag colours, Bright, Dull, other Metals. There is a whole spectrum to be had to the developer’s disposal, and we get 1 gaudy Gold. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Dunno if custom colours with sliders and such would be too far though. (Probably.)
  2. Different styles. Each hero gets a “Toy gun” or a “Futuristic style” or one that’s Jewel encrusted or even change the sound the gun makes (like the V.As shouting “Ratatata” or “Boom!”). Yeah, that last one is weird and hard to optimise, but it’s a different step to entertainment. You get specific themes for that specific hero on that specific time/event, but maybe have some things across-the-board?
  3. Emblem-stamped. We have team emblems and skins for the world cup, but what about giving Symmetra a Talon symbol on her teleporter legs, or Junkrat with a Blackwatch logo on his mines or wheel? Add in flags, hero icons, In-Lore organisations, etc. These could be moulds into the item, or a decal or paint applied.

And that’s the cosmetic side of things…

With the calls of new heroes and reworks and imbalances to damage, heals, shields, time-lapses etc - the developers have to change the ENTIRE hero concept at times just to factor in a new character, or something has been amiss that one change effects a hero or hero type. #ReworkMercy being one of the PRIME examples of a character being cut-up and rearranged completely and it changed her. Now there’s a scream for another character rework.
This is by-no-means an ultimate fixer I’m suggesting. Just a slightly different angle people could look at.

Some of a hero’s weapons could be of a different model of gun and give it a different mode of fire, which you decide at character select, similar to the skin choices when you start on Quickplay etc. McCree could choose from 3 different pistols:

  1. Standard magnum (his usual shots, with single option or hammer-multi-shot)
  2. Triple shot (3 shots-pause-3 shots-pause etc style, slight-faster pace, lose hammer)
  3. Mother-of-Magnum (2 heavy shots then reload, after 1st-shot, recoil effect that effects aim-cone for 1-1.5 secs. Hammer 2 shots, but isn’t effected by aim-cone-alter)

Or, with Junkrat, choose from the grenades to a spiked-Frisbee bomb. Better aim against Pharahs and snipers rather than shorter-ranged, gravity-heavy, crowd-control bombs filling a small area. It also sticks to a wall or the opponent for a moment before explodes.
Or even more simple, but still quite a big change - Make Reinhardt’s shield a physical shield as an option. It retracts and expands from the centre, and can physically stop not just the ammunition.
So, change the item and not the entire character may be a quicker fix (?) than completely changing the character and having to wait a while for that to develop. In some cases, not with everything - I understand abilities and base stats are always to be thought about too.

So what does everyone else think? You got anything to add for ideas, or you like/dislike some of the aspects discussed? The later gun options are a definite game-changer for ideas, I can see strong fors-and-againsts. This is just trying to find ways to make this menu or option give some new lease of life to the game, even in the darkest moments.

Honestly, it would be dope to see this in game.

Sounds like a lot of work, just to imitate tf2.

Well, as much as I’d love to see everything in the game, I’d be happy with even a smidgen of what has been mentioned on either end. I also wouldn’t expect everything on the list to be implemented - cuz as you mentioned, it’s a lot of work. But 2 years+ and it’s a blank slate.

I’ve never played TF2, so that’s just new news to me, and let’s be blunt - how many memes and vids have compared the 2 games anyways (or at least used their models in Source Film-maker)? Originality is a diamond in the rough - it’s usually an imitation of something already done, but why not make your own claim/footprint on it?
