I just played for 2 hours with less than 50 ms of latency (or at least that’s what the game is reporting). As soon as my partner join the game with their computer, my game started reporting 800 ms of latency, and it is completely unplayable. This only happens with Overwatch, we are all connected to the blizzard app voice chat and it’s working perfectly. We tried logging in Diablo 3, and everything goes smoothly. Fast.com
is reporting 35 ms and speedtest.net
reports 4ms. The task manager in both computers report that Overwatch is the only application using the network.
This is not the first time this happens, and it is always the same behaviour: one is playing perfectly fine, and as soon as the other joins, one of us (randomly, apparently) starts having 800 ms of latency approximately. I have no idea what’s going on, but seems to happen only in Overwatch.
Did someone experience a similar issue?

Hey,
Is it possible to provide to us a WinMTR? Also have you tried any of the troubleshooting mentioned in here?
As you may have seen already there is significant delay on the node above. If the problem persists you’ll want to contact your ISP directly to report this.
That said, it really shouldn’t be affected by who is playing locally. Just to check, are you and your partner playing from the same local connection?
Here are WinMTR outputs of both me and my partner. I was playing with 50ms of latency and they were playing with 800ms, same match.
Mine is:

I have but it hasn’t helped.
Can you elaborate on that? I think I might be confused. In this article eu.battle.net/support/en/article/7871
, it says:
To identify our servers, look for the following suffixes: attens.net, att.net, alter.net, telia.net
.
That node that shows a significant delay is prs-b8-link.telia.net
. Isn’t it one of your servers?
Yes, same network. This time, they were connected by ethernet, I was connected by wifi. I had 50ms of latency and they had 800ms.
Hi again Zug,
Thanks for your reply and additional info!
I agree that the support article is a bit confusing and may need to be updated, though the nodes wouldn’t be a part of our direct infrastructure in this case.
Rather Telia is a backbone carrier, providing inter-connectivity between different networks.
So it could still be useful for you to contact your ISP about it so that they can work with the relevant parties to troubleshoot any issues, or indeed help look over your home network setup.
Given that the route looks to same for both of you yet only one of you are experiencing issues, it would indicate that the problem is local.
I hope you can figure it out together with your provider!
Hey Tyskorn, thanks for the clarification. However I still don’t understand how it could be a local problem. We are both connected to the same network, and the game randomly behaves differently for us. One match I have 800ms of latency and my partner has less than 50ms. Next match is the other way around, they have 800ms and I have 60ms. Next match and we are both between 200 and 400ms. Those were 3 matches in a row, with no changes to the devices, no changes to the local network, anything. To make things more interesting, we are playing with a friend, who has the exact same provider, and he has no issues at all.
Also it’s worth mentioning that this started to happening recently, maybe a month ago. We have been playing this game for at least 2 years without any problems: same network, same configuration, same ISP.
When one of us plays alone, this doesn’t happen (or at least, with less latency), so I decided to try competitive, and see how that goes. It was ok-ish, but the last match was absolutely horrible: my latency was jumping between 50 ms and 300 ms. Here is the WinMTR (of the last match), in case you are curious:

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider
Given that both my WinMTR output and my partner’s look almost identical, and given that we have the same network configuration, and we don’t experience latency in any other non-blizzard game. Is it possible that this misbehaviour was introduced as part of a recent patch? maybe some sort of network optimization within the game?
I have really no idea what’s going on, but it’s impossible to keep playing like this
I play on ps4. Im from south africa. Generally we play between 200 to 220 ping. But as soon as i 2stack with my friend our ping shoots up to 270 to 290. Its like it puts us on some sort off scruff server. Its ridiculous how bad this is. And no its not our isp. Coz if we play single we get normal ping. If we duo then the ping changes. We have been playing ow for almost 2 years now and never experienced this problem. You can immediately notice when your on like this different server coz the people have really bot like names. They cant play hitscan and only wanna run doomfist and genji against a pharah. I mean cmon guys help me out to enjoy overwatch again. If needed be i can show you clipped footage of my normal ping and then the trash ping and server.
Telia is also my internet provider and OW is the only game i have latency issues constantly, some matches i get normal 40-50ms. But since pandemic started i cant get under 70ms in most of my games.
