Over the course of this weekend I’ve managed to go from an SR of 2359 all the way down to 1661.
I ended up running into a long losing streak, whilst doing so I tried to change things up, waiting to pick last to make sure the team had everything it needed. I usually main Moira or Zen and I feel I’m not a bad player as either of those. I ended up playing through tanks and DPS as well as a fair amount of lucio in that time. The problem is I STILL seem to be losing more games than winning.
I’ve watched my fair share of streams and video tips about hero selection and counters, positioning and about playing a particular role to try improve my game. I’ve tried joining teams and queuing solo but I just can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing so wrong. I don’t believe I’m playing that bad that I deserve to keep going down, but I don’t know what else it could be?
Well… As someone who got put into Bronze (from Silver) during last season I played due to 8 of 10 matches lost due to leavers… I feel your pain.
I am now trying to claw myself up from the tar pits, starting at 687. up to 697 then down below 500(!) and currently slowly making my way up to over 600.
Anyway, in all this, it is easy to forget a few things:
The match maker is programmed to never let you win more than 50% of games. It is up to you to beat the match maker, basically. So that’s one thing.
On the other hand it will try to find that 50 / 50 balance so if you start losing it will try to give you easier opponents. The problem is that it cannot determine WHY you lose games. Bad team comps, leavers, bad luck (remember, on average, your enemies will have an awful team comp as often as your team does)… It can’t determine what the difference is, it just notices you’re losing.
If you lose that much though, there are a few obvious answers: Maybe you got carried and didn’t know it? Maybe you belong in the 1500 range? OR do you have a lot of lag? Data losses? I have noticed the last week I get a lot of blinking from the “bad connection” symbols in the upper left. Are the EU servers straining? I have not been disconnected but especially Saturday a ton of other players were, on both teams several times. OR are you trying to improve by actually playing a hero you LIKE, but isn’t as good at? I did that mistake this season where I focused on Brig at first, not realizing it was sinking me because quite frankly I am much better as Moira.
No it’s not. That’s how a match maker designed to give you fair fights work. a fair fight is a fight against someone(s) with your skill level. The better the match, the closer the skill level.
This means that you will win 50% of your games, aka not climb. You have to play better than the match maker “expects” to climb.
You shouldn’t worry about those things. If you play better than your rank you will rank up even with a negative win/loss ratio because of personal performance.
Also flex only when needed because not only are you not on your strongest hero you also allow others to play something they are not good at just because they want to example: “dude its just a game I wanna genji” not okay in a competitive mode if you ask me.
5 dps is still winnable if you ever get this just moira.
I don’t know if this helps you out but here’s my 2 cents (I’m a healer). I’ve noticed I climb the most when:
I’m playing the game for fun and not looking at my SR at all.
I’m playing consecutive games and I’m not in a rush.
I’m flexing between 1-2 heroes within the same class.
Sticking with the same group I found in LFG until it disbands (even if it’s not perfect). This reduces the likelihood of leavers and wildcards + I get a sense of what people tend to play and try to work around that.
A match maker is designed to give you a 50% chance. That does not mean forced 50% win rate. If you dont understand why, then I would suggest researching why because your not gonna believe me anyways.
Yes ofc on average it gives you worse opponents because if you lose your sr will go down. Its that simple. Isnt it logical?
Ok this is very simple. You get sr adjustment based on performance below diamond. Play what you know how to play, perform better than others at your rank, you lose less you win more. And if you truly play better than others at your rank you will also win more than 50% of your games so you will skyrocket because of the performance boost plus you win more games. But then again if your not playing better than average player at your rank (or only slightly) you wont skyrocket anywhere. If you perform only slightly better than ur average sr you will climb a bit and slow because then you are where your supposed to be. If your low bronze your not a silver player. You might have been placed in silver (who knows) the first time you played and the match maker failed since you did belong to bronze so you fell down. 8 out of 10 games leavers is pretty hard to believe, I know on lower ranks people tilt and quit easy. Also if u were a silver (you would have to be 1000+ sr better than ur current rank) you would be able to win some of the 5v6 games and you would also perform way better and climb with under a 50% winrate anyways.
