What exactly is going on in Overwatch?

What I dont really understand is what is meant to be happening in Overwatch, as in why are all these heroes in a part of the world killing each other. So back in the day Overwatch was a team of super talented ppls and they were pals mostly but now they are trying to be reunited by Winston to do what exactly?

They all fly to random parts of the world and kill former friends and move random payloads from point to point, but like why lol?

maybe Im just thinking into it too much ha

The way I see it is, there’s an Omnic crisis going on, so all of these battles, attacking, defending, escorting, is all part of the bigger war going on in the Overwatch universe. It would be great to get an Overwatch 2 campaign mode which really develops and expands on the story.

like with TF2 the game of overwatch while loosely based on the lore, is completely devoid from the actual canon of the world

meaning that the story, in the animated shorts, comic books and origins are “what is happening” in overwatch…

where as the game, is just a mish mash mayhem of all of the aspects of the lore without impeding on the canon of the world

think of the game you play as a pocket dimension containing all the puzzle pieces from the actual overwatch universe but assembled in different ways, most of the time not making sense, and playing out accordingly but not impacting on the main continuity

I just think of it in a sandbox context. You have the background story and lore that is there and being expanded upon, but obviously for the match you can have any mix of Talon and Overwatch characters on your team on any of the locations from the lore regardless of the story. I don’t know if that’s what you mean?

Blizzard wanted to create a rich universe with good backstories, but it is to be considered separate from the actual game. Binding the game too rigidly to the lore, would have a negative effect on gameplay. They wanted every hero to be pickable and viable in every match for both teams, and as there would be no credible explanation to two Reinhardts fighting each other, they consider the lore to just be a background story for the people interested.

Or, maybe, for more games to be created around?

You ever watch “The Watchmen”? I think they basically copied that basic premise with the first generation of heroes being kinda outlawed, and then there’s a whole group of new heroes but they’ll team up with a few of the old ones.

They even half copied the name, lol.

Beyond that it’s just good guys vs bad guys. I really don’t think they know where they’re going with it. It’s a neat concept, but don’t expect an amazing narrative to come out of it.
