What happens if a lvl 300+ groups with all low level players?

If I am in a group with 5 friends and they have all only just bought the game and I am level 300+ how will that effect our match making?
Will it put us up against players around my level or their level?

As a 200-something who last night suddenly found himself surrounded and stomped by 400+ grouped up with a 100-something, I have a feeling that you’ll find yourself at their level, giving people like me again another reason to call it a night and go to bed.

Mmmh okay yeah I really don’t want to ruin the fun for anyone (on my team or the opposing team) so I was planning on just playing mercy and healing/teaching them while they find their feet in the game, I just didn’t want them to get put in a match against people way above their level. (But I also don’t want the opposing team to be upset by a high level player being in their match)

Thanks for your response!

I’m going to go off on a limb and say that it’s completely random with the only thing that is going to be consistent is that you’ll most likely be fighting with other groups of 6 people which might inherently have more people at higher lvls.

Everything else that you hear is merely anecdotal.

That depends on how good these people are. Rather than levels you should talk about MMR (MatchMaking Rating) which the system assigns to you based on your performance and that dictates your matchups. The higher MMR the better the players. When grouped up with players who have varying MMR then it tries to find similar MMR groups and the longer queue takes the more the system only considers your average MMR rather than trying to find a mirror match.

So i.e. if you have 2 players with 1500MMR and 1 player with 3000MMR then it tries to find another group with 2 players with 1500MMR and 1 player with 3000MMR, but since your average is 2000MMR you might also end up playing against just 3 players with 2000MMR as it’s the same as your average. This might be harmful to you or give you an advantage depending on the occasion.

If you’re joining higher MMR players then the worst case scenario is that you’ll face opponents you can’t handle at all, but if you’re able to handle the situation then it can be advantageous for you since there’s a high chance that your teammates are better than the opponents. It’s a 50/50 situation

Level really doesn’t matter anymore because Smurfing still happens.
I get so mad at smurfs that i literally send heated paragraphs to demoralize them, call it toxicity, i call it improving the game.

… you havent the reply above you, have you?

Jonseredi explained thoroughly how matchmaking works, how your level doesn’t matter, but your MMR.

They even explained that the game tries to create mirror matches with players of similar MMR so the winchance should be 50%.

The issue about smurfing has been, first, debunked by the reply above you and, second, it would derail the main topic, which is how MM deals with groups with varying player skills.

MMR without being involved in Competitive Play? Where and how?

Match maker will have really hard time putting you in games if they are brand new. Expect long ques and weird games.

Levels doesnt mean anything unless your a real new player at lvl 50 or under.

There is MMR in QP. End of story. Boom shakalaka.

Apparently, MMR will be calculated by playing both QP and competitive games.

Even if you play only QP, you MMR will be adjusted based on your performance.

This is another reasony why you have to wait until level 25 to be able to play competitive games. MMR does have an impact on your placement matches, after all.

(it makes placement machtes basically useless but that’s another topic)

Where is my MMR then? If I am so godlike that I am being placed with and against people with at least twice as much time into the game, then why isn’t that the norm and only happened once so far in that match last night?

Its hidden like its hidden in comp as well.

Godlike? I mean time doesent equal skill… Ive seen 1800+lvls hard stuck in bronze. Does that mean someone in silver with lvl 200 is godlike? No. They are bit better than the bronze. And I dont think everyone has the same goals in game, I mean a guy with so high lvl stuck in bronze cant have their goals to become better in the game or they have something limiting them ie. bad computer/connection/physical reasons. I mean there is people with severe disabilities who are higher than bronze and lower level than 1800.

Well, that’s kinda the point. Since I am playing mostly tank or support and all others as well with various success and mostly depending on mood, map, and direction, there is absolutely nothing to judge me by.

So I should believe in some sort of mysterious hidden value because… somebody said it exists? That’s an awful lot like religion to me.

How else would blizz do the match making? Like they say it exists and they actually just hired people to roll dices in the office 24/7 to match people?

Well, and it could not be as easy as grouping people by level unless it’s Competitive with the requirement to actually do placement matches? Because that’s what my groups usually look like. No more than like 100 Levels apart with the occasional solo oddball thrown in between.

Maybe you are right. Because thats your experience and no1 can deny it. How ever we have plenty of info (not complete) how the MMR works from Jeff Kaplan ie.
and many more like dev updates (I cant google them for you because I dont know how to do that, but go watcfh them if u want).
And how about smurfs? I have smurfs and when I play with them I start to face people who can be 50 times higher level than me. Ie. facing silver borders with 20lvl acc. And if I face other low lvls they are smurfs at that point. Btw its funny when I made my first smurf and people thought that they will be matched with complete newbs it was 12 smurfs pretty much swinging their dongs at each other and telling the other “noobs” to go heal because they were smurfs and wanted to play dps.

In competitive play your SR value is just a visual representation of your achievements on the ladder and your SR gain/loss is dependent on your MMR and the average MMR of other players. The MMR that dictates your matchups and so on is based on your performance in that same gamemode (so QP, all the arcade gamemodes and competitive) and the only exception is your first competitive season’s placement games. Your starting MMR in your first competitive season’s placement games is determined by your Quickplay’s MMR but after that they’re separate. In other words every single gamemode has their own MMR but competitive mode’s MMR starts from your QP MMR.

If you spend 25s in google searching about this y ou can find official comments about the system. Believe it or google it, your choice

The reason they keep MMR hidden is to protect their own matchmaking algorithm and also players have the tendency to play to maximize numbers rather than get good at the game when an important number like this is public. The only way you’ll ever have a chance to approximately know what your MMR is by having a stable SR even after 20 games. In those situations your SR represents your MMR rather accurately.

You have no idea how huge skill variance players have. I hit diamond rank before I hit level 200 (or 300?) yet there are players with silver portraits who have been at platinum in their peak. I stopped playing competitive after season 5 due to the gamemode being flawed+smurfs so my latest SR is ~3200, but I could climb to high masters/GM currently so even when my SR is almost 1000 less than what my opponents usually have the hidden MMR is still the same between us. At this level of play you sometimes play against lvl2000 players and even though they have 4x more time played than I have they’re still diamond rank.
