I’m just curious. I can’t think of a reason myself to why it does that, and it’s super annoying, especially seeing as an update just came out and deleted all my highlights.

Because the highlights are saved as “inputs”. If an update changes something related to Heroes, game physics, and so on, the Highlights would become corrupted, and play incorrectly because of it.
I know it’s quite annoying when an update that doesn’t change anything about that still deletes the highlights, but that’s the reason to why they are deleted on each update.
would be nice if they make an anouncement before the update, so you can save the highlights
