Because in OW1 open que, there were always the situtation: 4-5 dps 1 healer/tank. And the dps started arguing with each other who should swap for healer/tank. Most of the time, no1 did and team kept arguing amongst each other. Those who wanted play and win, often had these ‘‘dps mains’’ who refuses to swap, no matter the situtation. Role que kinda fixed that. And for those who wants still play open que and fight for the picks, there’s still open que for them.
I agree that open Q is better
Because some people like me feel better with role queue. Have you ever played OW1? Have you ever experienced that chaos? I wanna know what I am going to play and play that role only for that match. I don’t want to be forced to change roles in the middle of a game.
But it is all up to preferences, and exactly for that reason, there is an open queue as well as a role queue.

You can do all of these things in open Q and you’re never forced to play any particular role…
(For the last month or two I played Reinhardt exclusively in open Q and never switched and it’s gone fine…)
But you do get reported for throwing if you don’t pick what other people want in OQ.
Open Queue with role limits would’ve been far better. 2 tanks 2 dps 2 support but anyone can pick any role as long as there’s an available role slot.

In my personal opinion this would not be open in the sense of being open to role switches mid match but as a separate mode this could be interesting…
They have it with the roll lock in the arcade content creator mode but I don’t like it because someone always picks tank before I do so I end up just having to quit most matches…
Yes while it is true, I am a fan of more pre-defined teams than random chaos. I love being planned and an open queue gives me anxiety. If I am going to do something like that, I would play arcade modes, instead of open queue honestly.
