How can I improve?

I’m really bad at RTS games in general, but I want to improve. My biggest issue is is my total inability to deal with micro.

I always feel completely overwhelmed by everything I have to manage at the same time. I’ve googled it and it’s come up with “use control groups”, “queue stuff” and the like, all of which is brilliant advice, but it hasn’t helped.

So my question is: how can I improve at Starcraft II specifically (since this is the SC2 forum, and SC2 is my favourite RTS)?

You might say “practise!”, which is fair enough, but I’m pretty sure I would get totally thrashed in matchmaking and my only friend who likes RTSs is not the best player in the world, but is good enough to be guaranteed to win every game against me, which is a bit disheartening. So how can I practise in a helpful way, and finally get out of the pit I feel like I’ve been stuck in since I started playing RTSs 5 years ago?

Watch the replay after most of your games (especially those you lost) twice, once in your opponents perspective and once in everyone perspective.

for you it will be practice, getting used to everything, learn good habbits like control group usage and camera location hotkeys.

Micro doesn’t become important until you reach higher levels ie Diamond and above. Before then just having more stuff will move you up.

Before working on the micro aspect of the game you need to work on the fundamental mechanics of starcraft. Building workers and building supply structures. In order to do this efficiently you need to have a mental check list. A continuous cycle in order to complete the tasks at hand.

Your control groups don’t need to be anything fancy just something in which you feel comfortable for example mine are units on 1, 2 and 3 production on 4,5,6 and 7 and tech on 8,9,0.
