Bonus Rolls – What Happened and Next Steps

Hello!

We want to follow up on our previous post about issues we encountered with the new Voidforge bonus roll system. The Voidforge system is a brand new system using new tech that enables players to earn their desired myth track gear utilizing a bonus roll currency called Nebulous Voidcores to improve the player experience of gearing during Season 1 of Midnight.

What Happened?

We tested the system on our internal environment to make sure it was working as intended and fix issues, but there was a subtle bug we missed that we can now see was a result of a limitation in our internal test environment.

This new bonus roll system is intended to work like this: every time you use your Nebulous Voidcore on an additional piece of endgame loot, whether in Mythic+ Dungeons, Raids, Bountiful Delves, or Prey, it saves a record of the piece of loot and checks it off a list tied to your character, so that you shouldn’t receive the same piece of loot again. After we launched 12.0.5 (and before we fixed the bug), when players queued with other players into M+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves or Raids, it was possible for the roll data to sometimes save to the wrong database, leading to duplicate rolls.

How Could That Happen?

There are some limited differences between our internal realms and the realms you play on, and one of those differences is the number of databases we use to support the live realms. Some of the databases tied to live realms hold all of your character data, and this includes the list where the bonus rolls are saved.

The functionality we had in place was working as intended for internal environments, but was ultimately the wrong set up for live environments with their multitude of databases.

When it became apparent that some players were occasionally receiving the same item twice, we made it a top priority to fix the issue, and we got the system working as intended on live realms at around 8:05 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, April 22 (05:05 CEST April 23).

What’s Next?

We really want to make this right as best we can, so we’re going to refund every Nebulous Voidcore that was spent before we fixed the issue. We’re identifying every player-character who spent a Nebulous Voidcore before the fix and in the next day or so, we will grant them back to you in-game.

We want to get players who were affected by the bug back on track, and we want to help players who spent their tokens before the fix to mitigate the possibility of further duplicate rolls of the loot they received.

How Can There Be Further Duplicate Rolls?

For example, let’s look at Jay the Mistweaver Monk who spent 2 Nebulous Voidcores in Pit of Saron and received Flayer’s Black Belt and Shaggy Wyrmleather Leggings through the bonus roll system before the bug was fixed. Jay’s bonus rolls may or may not have been properly checked off the list in the database prior to the fix, so the next time he goes into Pit of Saron and tries to use his bonus rolls, he may receive new items or he may receive the Belt or the Leggings again.

Since the system is now working as intended, these new rolls made will be saved to the checklist properly, so duplicates of items rolled on after the fix are not possible.

What If I Didn’t Spend My Nebulous Voidcores On Bonus Rolls?

If you did not spend any of your Voidcores before the fix, any bonus roll you now make will properly be accounted for and checked off the list, and you will not be at risk for any duplicate rolls.

Thank You For Your Patience And Understanding

We apologize for all of this. While it provided us with a better understanding of a potential design pitfall that we will ensure we avoid in the future, we regret disrupting the game for you. Thank you for your passionate feedback the last couple of days. We really appreciate it.

Nice to see you set it right, Also don’t take some of the comments to hard people need to remember you’re still humans at the end of the day.

We all make mistakes and miss things, hopefully this will help you guys and gals put more resources into the programs you use to catch these issues.

As someone who got the same thing when rolling my second one…YAAAYYYY I did not need 2 chest pieces from seat lol and felt silly for rolling my second one in the same dg but legit thought…what are the odds. TY for fixing it !!!

Ngl, this makes me wish I had used my own since if you get what u wanted while it was bugged, thats free bonus rolls for something else. Makes me feel bad for telling the guild I am in to not use theirs due to the bug. :face_exhaling:

I understand the reasoning though.

I just got a duplicate item right now! wtf

GG to all who get 2 extra rolls and had no dublicates, now they are getting 4 mythic items in this week. Feels good that they dont spend time on complex algorithm to decide which player really got dublicates and only give them rolls.

Look, whilst I appreciate the explanation AND the steps you are taking to rectify the issue, isn’t the wider issue here the fact that every patch is now a bug infested mess?

We know you know this happens, we’ve seen Ion Hazzikostas comment in the past about trying to do better, but something clearly isn’t working if each patch comes out worse than the one before.

Are we going to hear anything regarding this particular eight week cycle?

Im honestly confused so people that got dupes or no dupes are now 1 or 2 items ahead of others, those that patiently waited get punished am i hearing this correct ?

You may as well just give everyone full myth track gear set and call it the season, because the season just ended, what is even the point anymore, you bricked many characters due loot bugs rng bugs bonus rolls bugs recrafting bugs crafting bugs and so on…

Seriously WTF…

Your fix is BS.

In order to help the people who got duplicate items you are screwing over all those who did not use there roll because they new there was a bug…..

What makes it worse is statistically speaking the number of people who got dupes are ALOT less than those who rolled and didnt, as the likelyhood of getting the same item twice in a row when picking from say a pool of 6 items is a LOT less than getting something different… so most that rolled early are just getting 2 free mythic items and will be ahead of every one else…

Stupid Logic - Good Job………

Used a bonus roll on raid.

It took 2 - because thats frickin logical isn’t it?

On topic, your QC has sucked for years because you’re cheaping out on it. Shame you need to grovel out an apology for corporate cheapness.

I am so happy!!!

Ok, appreciate the effort to provide a longer explanation, but what about going to the Eversong Woods delve and using the Mirror disables your character’s strafe functionality, is this an incorrect database setup?

Or half the classes receiving game-breaking bugs or L’ura being unkillable (which changed our raiding priority on Wed and we’re a 1-day rauding guild that is still progressing Mythic bosses, so that’s an impactful bug for us), was it an incorrect database setup? Or the private auras issues in Voidspire, or the 3.4k achievement, or the housing bug on NA, etc etc etc. Or MM hunter rework being untestable not until 2 weeks till patch release, when it was already too late and it turns out the rework needed more thougts, changes and tuning, but no time and now MM is a mess.

As someone above said, the major problem for me at least is not that bonus rolls were bugged. It’s the fact that it felt like your senior devs were working on the launch of yhe Midnight and the junior devs were left to vibe code the 12.0.5 patch, since it is supposed to be minor. Seriously, clicking a delve item disables strafing???

Please reassess the 8-week patch cadence, this is clearly not sustainable. You will lose more subs due to pissed off players than you will gain just because stuff is out a bit faster.

It’s nice that you are trying to fix things for people who were affected. But this solution causes an unfair disadvantage for people who waited for a fix. And you are refunding all people who rolled before the fix. They can get duplicates since first rolls were not commited to database, but they can also roll for another dungeon or raid boss if they are happy with the items they got before. Also not all people got duplicates.

My thoughts exactly.

Yeah, there’s been an issue with bonus rolls. It has screwed players over.
But there’s also an issue with Demon Hunters who are just insanely overpowered.
And Marksman Hunters in PvP are completely broken.
The list goes on.

And it’s like this every patch now.
We had the pre-expansion patch where people were just nuking down Dimensius on Mythic like he was a target dummy.

It’s like Blizzard releases a patch, and then everything breaks and the game’s integrity goes into the toilet, and then the developers come in with the fixes afterward.

But the damage is already done!

Why put in effort and try to better yourself and take anything in the game seriously when it just breaks apart in the most comical way every 8 weeks?

It’s a joke.

Let us know how the fix go’s and if you keep the items or not while gaining back bonus rolls, because it puts you ahead least 1 myth track item, while those that got lucky are now 2 items ahead, those that only rolled once before hotfix are potentially still screwed over or may still get lucky short term.

Also while on it why these topics not stickied, are they trying to sweep their mistakes under a rug while trying to act as if they did the right thing, because yes they did but they also did not until we know if those items are kept or not or refunded along with the bonus rolls.

and if CM reads this, please ask how devs gonna deal with the potential new issues if they are even their, we only got more questions now that need to be answered.

I did keep the duplicate belt in case and am wearing the other one. So time will tell!!

Those GameSpot and PC Gamer articles really woke you guys up huh?

Now fix PvP. The fact you people get paid is a joke.

Tell us once you get the bonus rolls refunded if those items stay or taken away, the best fix would be take 1 back give 1 bonus roll back and add the belt to knockout list.

If this is to much work well they should hire people for it for all i care, them cheaping out on QA is what leads to this, players should not be punished for their mistakes.

From the text above, it sounds like you would not take the already acquired 3 M items from these poor souls and will award them another 3, right?
I see here so many happy people that are glad you “did the thing right”
This is ridiculous.

I am both surprised and glad Blizzard took this approach.
Since no matter what Blizzard would have done(besides preventing this bug in the first place). Somebody would have been unhappy.

  1. Fix the bug and do nothing - yeah hardly pleases the crowd. Was half expecting Blizzard to make this approach. Glad I was proven wrong.
  2. Fixes the bug, refund cores and take away the items gained. Then also screw over the people who actually got their bis or good items since they have “re-roll” the item. And what happens if you got a myth chest, catalysted to tier piece. Then Blizzard took it away, you re did the dungeon and rolled wrists as a replacement? So you not only lost your catalyst charge but an entire inventory slot and tier bonus?
  3. Fix the bug, refund the cores. Everyone keeps their current items. Despite some screaming “this is not fair” I believe this approach does LESS damage overal than the above 1st and 2nd approach.
