Leveling has changed - is it for the better?

How Alliance leveling used to look

  • Elwynn Forest 1–10

  • Dun Morogh 10–11

  • Loch Modan 11–13

  • Westfall 13–14

  • Darkshore 14–16

  • Westfall / Redridge 16–18

  • Loch Modan 18–19

  • Deadmines 19–20

  • Darkshore 20–22

You had to travel through a lot of zones to keep doing yellow and green quests.

How it looks now

  • Elwynn Forest 1–13

  • Hall of Thanes 13–15

  • Westfall 15–19

  • Deadmines 19–21

More quests in Elwynn carry you to 13. Hall of Thanes and Deadmines, with buffed dungeon quest experience, food buffs, and extra rested experience, cover the rest. You never have to hop from zone to zone. Questing and leveling in the open world change for the worse.
Consistent gear from professions, updated itemization, reworked spells, and better dungeon loot mean people are chain-pulling two mobs at level 16–20.

The main character got a huge nerf - The world.

Personally, I’d prefer a slower leveling process. I don’t want to run a dungeon and suddenly gain two or three levels from the quests. That’s not what Classic was about.

I’m interested to see how leveling from 20 to 30 compares with 1 to 20. Will it be the same pace, faster, or slower? That should give us a much better idea of what the overall leveling experience will actually be like.

I don’t want to think the developers don’t understand what they mean when they talk about the “journey”, especially if someone could hypothetically go from 1 to 60 in two or three days. That would feel ridiculous when you compare it to Classic in 2004, where reaching 60 could take weeks or even months depending on how you played.

I personally took around two months because I was exploring, completing different zones, and generally taking my time rather than speedrunning. Others did it in weeks. That’s the kind of variation I’d like to see again. I really don’t want to see people hitting level 60 within a couple of days, because at that point, I’d seriously question whether the developers understand the experience they’re trying to create.

They have added more than 1000quests. They should have increased the amount of xp needed to reach 60. That should have been a very slow process if you want to focus on the world, as you advertise. Instead they give food XP buff!!! We will all reach 60lvl in no more than 2 months.

Getting exp for two or three levels for a single dungeon run will lead to me doing no dungeon runs at all.

The old way still looks great to me, the new one rather too fast.

But I’m not sure to expect from Blizzard, who never really seem to understand that taking the slow route is an option for quite a few people.

They probably think that stopping Levelling at 60 will satisfy people and make them all enter the usual “Endgame”

Meh… well, 1000 quests at least

I’m happy that there at least will be different routes for alts to explore instead of having to do practically every quest in every zone from 45-60

Agree, exp shouldn’t be this fast. Classic game starts at level1 (not max level like in retail), so keeping players longer questing in leveling zones is the essence of classic. It’s just original classic didn’t have enough quests. Getting 2.5levels in a single dungeon is just as bad as retail.

Dungeons should be about loot, with a small exp (max half level) bonus.

Always? I left Teldrassil around level 13 as well on Classic I believe. Deffo not level 10. I also went straight to Darkshore.

Why are you even posting what leveling guide add-ons say, I thought the world was so important? So you’re basically posting the most optimal and fastest levelling route and you’re also complaining in another thread that levelling is too fast. Can’t make that stuff up.

Its not a leveling guide, its just where Yellow quests are…

I’m fine with the general XP gains, but I really don’t like how theres buffood for more XP. XP boosts should not be a thing in any way whatsoever.

And? Its literally the optimal and fastest levelling route that every single speed run and levelling addon seems to use as well, such as RXP. You can just level perfectly fine from Teldrassil into Darkshore into Ashenvale without any problem. That’s how I have always done it in late Vanilla, Classic, Anni and how I will be levelling in Forever.

Night Elf Starting Area is the only exception , and you mention it as the rule

I don’t even understand what you’re trying to say here..

It’s fine. Play the other zones on a different character and try some new paths

Idk about the rest but Hall of Thanes quests give waaay too much exp. Probably unintended. Be sure to put in a report.

They deliberately buffed dungeon quest XP but nerfed dungeon mob XP, encouraging you to run each dungeon once or twice instead of farming it.

So it’s probably on purpose.

It’s intended. They stated very clearly in the Q&A that dungeon quests were getting a large buff to compensate for mob exp in dungeons getting nerfed. This is to encourage players to do dungeons while leveling, but unless really wanting to deck yourself out in full blue gear that repetitive runs was not worth it. Reason being that they want people out in the world more than to just dungeon farm for multiple levels and outright skip alot of zones. This would also kill off the dungeon boosting issues that occured alot in classic.

I think it’s sad with the spead and danger level of it all, as it looks now.
I like when it takes slower, ya explore more, and don’t have to level multiple alts tp do it, even if i love playing alts to.
It’s only to 60 so make it count, make it slower, make it harder.

Oh I guess that makes sense. There’s still incentive to run a dungeon multiple times with the new itemization though.

Most people will reach 60 lvl in 2-3 weeks. The raids will open in 35 days and you want to be there, to not fall behind. I’m pretty sure, week 2 raid will require achievement.

Blizzard schedule hints that this game’s going to be very intensive. They already outlined the roadmap to release 2-3 raids every new season and seasons seem to be very short. They can talk whatever they want, but their actions indicate the opposite of what they’re talking.

Just a comparison with a game that’s really features horizontal progress. OSRS. It has two raids. In 2022 they released third raid. In 2026 or 2027 they’ll release fourth raid. Blizzard will release 5 raids in a few months and it’s obvious that they’ll keep the cadence, so in a 5 years there will be like 50 raids in this game.

This. That statement and vision needs more consistency. The XP gain needs tuning. Some other stuff too. If it’s supposed to be about the journey and not a rush to the end. At least that’s the Forever presentation and marketing.
