I'm worried about the mega server thing in Europe

Hi,

I’m making this post because I don’t see a lot of discussion around this subject and the details of how it’s going to work. The more I think about it, the more I’m concerned. I’m talking about the mega server thing and its implementation in Europe. I think it comes with significant challenges and issues.

First: the languages.

It is not for nothing that, back in 2019, we already had to fight to get national servers and then to get an appropriate amount of them. It was important to the community building and I think it still is now. Some people just don’t speak English on top of their mother tongue, and some other don’t want to have a 50/50 chance to be unable to communicate properly with the player they just met.

So, they are adding a “select main language” feature. Which is nice. If it does work well. Because I have questions. Let’s say German players are enough to fill 3.2 layers in a region. What is the system going to do ? Make 4 layers filled to 80% with only Deutsch speaking players or will they bring in a few French or Italian ones to fill the gap ?

Is the rule strict or can you still encounter people from other languages ? Because if the rule is strict … Remember me : why make a mega server instead of one for each country again ?

Then there is the chat. For region chat: messages from every layer, only messages of people that have your language as a setting themselves or only the ones from your current layer ?

Same question for the /2. Or the /world? Because even If it’s only people of your language, the volume of messages from all the French is going to make it spammy as hell. French players had 4 different servers at launch (or close to it) and for the majority of vanilla and the chat was already well filled. And I’m not even considering the German players who are what ? twice as many as the French ones ? It would be a cacophony if they all share the same chat.

Also, will there is an option for people who are fine interacting in 2 or more languages and want to meet a maximum amount of people ?

Second: the auction house.

Pros: It should probably be well stocked for common items. Niche items will probably be easier to find too.

Cons: Remember when you had to sell your crafted items and your prices were undercut every 5 min 24/7 because someone on your server was botting constantly playing the AH ? Let’s see how we fare in a world where all the AH maniacs share one single AH for an entire continent. Also, I expect the price the rarest and most demanded items (hello Formula: Enchant Chest - Greater Stats) to go sky high if the whole server is gunning for it.

It feels like some kind of experiment. A very risky one. That was designed only with the US in mind.

People from the beta : how is it looking ? Do you have the answers to those questions ? I would like nothing more than to be proven that I’ve been worrying for nothing.

unfortunately, you aren’t.

If I remember what Nora said in one of the interviews, you’ll generally be placed with players who selected the same language preset. So if you choose French, you’ll be around other French-speaking players, for example.

The bigger question is how layering will work. Will there be a limit, such as 100 or 1,000 players with the same language, before you’re moved to another layer? We won’t really know until launch, since Blizzard hasn’t provided many detailed answers. Their latest Q&A was also pre-recorded and consisted of selected questions.

Even if you’re in a layer with mostly German-speaking players, you may still see them, but you shouldn’t see their chat if you’ve selected French. Ideally, the game will automatically select your language based on your Battle.net or installation language.

As for the auction house, its stock comes from players, so it will start off fairly empty on a fresh server. Prices will probably be chaotic initially, and you’ll have undercutters, scammers, and potentially auction house bots. Always double-check prices before selling because people may deliberately list items cheaply to manipulate the default selling price.

Enchantments currently can’t be placed on the auction house as items. You’ll have to advertise in trade chat, trade with the customer, enchant their item, and receive payment. Enchanting materials can still be sold normally. This could change before launch.

The mega-server system is new, so there are still plenty of unanswered questions. Hopefully everything works as intended, and Blizzard can fix any major issues before WoW Forever launches on November 4th.

Are we lumped in with the Americans too? could do without the asmon incel army

So right now, in the beta, you’re all playing on the same server. You’re playing with people from the United States, Germany, France, Russia, and wherever else. Everyone is currently on that one mega-server.

When the servers go live, Europe will have its own dedicated mega-servers for PvP, PvE, and RP, with Hardcore servers being added once they are actually set up.

I do not mind, i think it’s better that way rather than dividing everyone, once they made the language servers the game felt empty..and most people on EU still speak english, if anything i would like to select more than one language.

excellent! ty for the info.

Why would i want to end up with germans, french, spain who have no clue what i say, Yes i would like Language layering and if i choose English i want people i can understand

I’ve noticed the language dependant chat channels.

My question is, if it will be possible to select more than one languange chat. I am german but have always used the english client, but do want to see english and german chat.

Im not an English native speaker at all, i understand 4 languages, do not think everyone is stupid

If you can’t speak English - for real, what are you doing with yourself?

Personally, I don’t know. You can create chat channels for things like whispers and other messages, so I’m not sure whether you can do something similar with languages.

My best recommendation would be to go onto Twitch, find a streamer you watch, and ask them if they know whether you can create a channel and set it to another language. I’ve got a feeling you probably can’t, because it looks like the language settings are handled through the main game options rather than the chat window.

That said, it’s definitely a valid question. I think Blizzard should give you the option to select multiple languages for people who are multilingual. I know my wife and I would definitely like that, but I really don’t know if it’s possible.

Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to spell out how World of Warcraft: Forever will handle realms when it launches on November 4, 2026, moving away from the classic server model and toward a single regional mega-server. The studio is positioning the new architecture as a major departure from WoW Classic.

Players will not pick an individual server. Instead, they will choose only a region — America, Europe, or Asia — plus a preferred playstyle, after which they will be placed into the corresponding version of the shared world.

Blizzard also said the game will use layering to spread players out and reduce load. Grouping and open-world encounters will be restricted to players with the same playstyle, while the phase system will also take the preferred language into account.

The language option itself is straightforward: players will be able to select a preferred language, and the game will automatically match them with others who chose the same one. That setting can be changed once every 24 hours.

Have not seen a single blue posted any answer to anything on this forum. This forum is basically the wailing wall.

Yeah I want atleast two languages for sure - just one to choose from is really stupid.

You are surely new to the forum, then.

Passing on the blind contempt of equating not speaking a second language with being stupid or judging people for that. Only half the population in europe is speaking English well (among people for which it’s not a mother tongue).

Even assuming the wow public is way above the average, like let’s say 80%, it still leave a bunch of people in the dirt.

“Mostly” here being the key problem. If I’m alone in a layer full of Germans (regardless of how kind they might be to turn to english to include me), then I’m not having it as good as if I was in an insulated server.

Also, seeing players that you can’t talk to is not reassuring. It would mean that the system has failed to provide you with the full experience.

I was not talking about the launch. I was talking about the general use of the AH if 500.000 players use the same one.

I agree this new system brings many questions. And chat is also important it’s not just layers.

I would prefer that chat is shared, even if that would mean lots of other languages messages. I don’t want to be cornered to a “preference”.

The blue posts are mostly announcements

The language question is a legitimate concern, although I am cautiously optimistic. We are Europeans, we have the wonderful and occasionally inconvenient habit of speaking many different languages.

For the global channels, chat-filter addons should help considerably. You can add common words or character sets from languages you cannot read, and messages containing them will be hidden. For example, a few recurring French keywords, or Cyrillic characters, can remove most posts you cannot understand. That is not about avoiding French or Russian players; it is simply about keeping your chat readable. It is not a perfect substitute for thoughtful language settings, but it should make the practical problem manageable.

The auction house worries me more. Putting an entire continent’s supply, demand, goblins, bots, and sleepless undercutters into one economic arena really is an experiment, and I am very curious to see what Blizzard’s safeguards and design are there.
