See you all at the next!
From one region of the world to another!
“New orders received, we’re all going home.”
The rare sentence, which most soldiers embrace more than love. At last, the valiant troopers of Stormwind could find themselves back in the capital city of Stormwind, back to the ones they love and luxeries a city provides. A break from the frontline.
Unfortunately, days of leave usually never goes as a hopeful soldier expects, and before the first week was over, they had received new orders of employment. This time, the march went east.
To the mountains of Redridge, the town of Lakeshire, had requested reinforcements of the Stormwind army to strengthfully lend aid in holding back the increased horde of savage gnolls, making more activity in the lands, assaulting trading wagons and kidnapping the villagers. A constant threat that had turned even dire.
With that, the leaves of home for the soldiers had been cancelled, and they set upon their tasks.
“Welcome to Redridge Mountains, D-Company!”

Chapter 17 — The Long Stand
You never expect the last march to be the one that does not go anywhere.
After Doom’s Way, we were sent on standard furlough. Nothing unusual. A short rest, like always, a ritual more than a relief. After two years of continuous operations, you stop asking for rest. You just wait for the next movement order. We thought we had seen every edge the kingdom had to bleed.
Then we came back, boots cleaned and gear stowed, ready to form up for whatever came next.
Instead, they called us to the parade yard.
I remember the light that evening. Pale and uncommitted. The kind of sky that promises neither rain nor clarity. Lieutenant Whiteford stood at the front, clipboard tucked under his arm, and said in his even voice:
“Effective immediately, D Company along with the rest of the 82nd Infantry Battalion is to be reassigned to domestic operations under Stormwind Command.”
A few of us blinked. No one moved.
He continued. “That includes city patrols, wall rotation, gate assignments, and civil standby duties. This order comes directly from High Command.”
And that was it. The moment everything shifted.
There was no outrage, no protest. Just silence, slow and creeping, as the words settled over us. One by one, we realized we were not deploying again. There was no front. We had been reassigned to watch duty. And Parker was already gone.
They had promoted him while we were on leave. Commander of the battalion. Fast, quiet, sudden.
His name disappeared from the company board without a word.
No farewell, no handover. Just an empty office and a sealed order posted to the wall.Everyone knew Parker hated administrative work. He was a man of action, always had been. He spoke little, but he led from the front, always the first over the line and the last to leave it. He belonged in the field. He took the promotion because it was asked of him, but none of us believed he wanted it.
Whiteford filled the gap, for a time. Acting Captain. He was capable, thoughtful, methodical. No one could deny he was a proper officer. But he was not ours. He had been with us on exchange from the Kul Tiran Admiralty, and we all knew he would return to Boralus when it ended. His leadership felt temporary, a patch rather than a plan.
We did our duty. Drills, rotations, and long watch shifts over merchant lanes and quiet ramparts. The name we had earned, the ‘Hounds of Wrynn’, began to feel out of place. We were trained hunters, not hallway statues. Some of us tried to keep sharp. Others started drifting, inside themselves if not outright from the company.
Then Whiteford disappeared too.
No announcement. No sendoff. Just gone. Transferred, returned to Kul Tiras. In his place came a new lieutenant, fresh from the officer academy, yet to see combat. He was eager, polite, but out of his depth. We watched him stumble through the motions, unsure whether to pity him or envy his blank slate.
Rumors moved faster than orders. Some said Parker was already working to get the 82nd back in the field, pushing every lever he could reach. No one could confirm it, but many of us chose to believe it. We needed something to hold on to.
We held formation, but not momentum. The stillness did something to us. Not a breaking, more like a settling. Like dust gathering on steel.
Looking back, that season in Stormwind did not mark the end of my time with D Company. But it did change everything.
We had not been defeated. We had not disbanded. But something in us was different after that. The marching had stopped while no one had taught us how to stand still, and no one had told us what to do with the silence.
A massive thank you to everyone who has been along for this ride!
Onlookers, friends, guests, allies and foes that we have had the pleasure and at times displeasure to encounter during these past one and a half years.
I will be quitting this game to refocus on IRL committments and after a discussion, we decided it best to let D-Company in its current state go off in to a sunset ending.
The Hounds of Wrynn, or the 82nd Infantry Battalion, might come back in different iterations by officers and members in the future but for now this chapter in our story has ended.
Until we meet again, if we ever do.
King’s honour, friend.
I’ve glanced at this guild from the sidelines from time to time and it looked like a good time for military enjoyers and I know Gnorf always had a steady head on his shoulders, so it’s always sad to see a good bunch go.
King’s honour, friends.
It was great to RP with you guys, however brief, and as I told you before: good luck in the future! <3
Sad to see the guild go, my character was just beginning to get to know some of the soldiers.
It has been a guild that had that old school halo, where the footman still matters - despite the direction that the ‘World Saving’ champion is being pushed by the main quest and story.
