Oh I didn’t see that! As a Frost DK that’d be handy when i proc death strike and need to heal up fast!
I’m so excited that Wow’s gameplay is being modernised like this!
I really can’t wait to see how they inevitably add charged spells and cone AoE’s to the established classes.
Absolutely. The UI updates and these additions are more exciting to me than the new content. Yes the content looks fun and I can’t wait to try dragon riding (I’m trying to avoid spoilers but occasionally I read a Wowhead news heading xD), but these affect the way we play the entire game, so far in a great way.
Did a search after I woke up and Blizzard Watch posted a pretty detailed article about the Soft Targeting.
Works both in and out of combat, and can override it with normal targeting if there’s one enemy you want to stay on.
I still think quickly picking out one specific mob in a pile might be tricky, but it’ll make swapping between 2 or 3 much faster!
Practice will make perfect. In casual play I can see myself never hard targeting for sure.
People do forget that we don’t only have Tab target though; I’ve used Target Scan Enemy (Hold) for ages - it targets in a straight line directly in front of you (limited by camera view), so it’s very accurate, but again - big pack issues.
I always miss the Enemy List when I swap to WoW after the other game xD
Doesn’t that already exist? I used it extensively in the N’Zoth encounter - the mouse-over version but there’s a target version too. It’s in keybinds.
Now that’s cool but I fear it won’t work well unless the amount of pets is… reduced. Imagine dynamic target switching depending on your angle against a demonology warlock. Sure you can just lock it in but then it won’t swap once you run away from the demo warlock. Njeh.
WoW already has a target prioritization system that pretty much ignores small minions. I haven’t done pvp in more than a year, but when you’re against demonology warlock, if I remember right, when you press Tab, you will always either target the warlock or their main minion, it will ignore the imps completely. By default you won’t even see their nameplates.
There’s also the question of whether this action combat will be able to damage explosions in Explosive M+ and shaman totems, because currently you have to manually click those. They can’t be tab-targeted.
This is literally in the top 3 most hype news from Dragonflight for me!
There is a setting about enemy minion nameplates. Maybe turning them off will help? But I need to test things myself, I might be wrong and all minions are equal priority in the tab targeting.
But with action combat you will still be able to lock in your target. From the patch notes it really reads like it will work like the combat in TERA or Skyforge, which are both tab-targeting games with soft-locking and dynamic target switching, which creates the illusion of action combat. And it was really fun in both games.
I believe this is the setting yes. 90% sure that things without nameplates aren’t seen by tab target.
I actually didn’t know that Explosive isn’t tab-targetable; Target Scan picks them up as normal. Hopefully Action Combat will too, since the more people can target them easily, the better.
Either way though, I suspect that Action Combat will be more suited to casual play than M+ or Raid.
If you’re on your own then you are in control of where the mobs move, so you could keep your target consistant, if it even matters that you do.
In M+ you have a tank moving the packs, which would change your target (if I’m understanding correctly) without warning, which wouldn’t be good if you’re trying to target a specific mob.
Of course if you are the tank it could work xD
In Skyforge I was using a mix of unlocked combat and locking on a target when it was needed, including changing between the two modes in the middle of a fight. It worked out really well, and I’m assuming it’ll work out well in WoW.
I don’t think you will have to go to a menu and swap between tab target and action combat like you should in some games. I think both will be enabled all the time at the same time, as they were in Skyforge.
I am very excited about this button. It is in gw2 since 2012. I am happy it is being implemented in WoW. Dismounting zones is fine but this button is better
Yup, that is how it’s worded
It’s a nice and flexible design for sure! I just see myself relying less on it if someone else is moving adds around.
But then I’ve never actually played with a system like it, I’ll have to try it out for a while, seems like something that will take a bit of practice. Like everything haha
I won’t say anything to you then, but as a casual player this expansion might make me play far more consistently and it’ll probably be my favourite expansion if they don’t find some way to mess it up.
Tbh if they are adding full native controller support and they want it to be seen as viable, I do think they’re going to need to change PVE content and how it works, in the other game you’ve either got a full party of 8 or a full alliance of 24 which is split into 8… in Wow you get either a party of 5 or a big raid window full of 10+ people, and healing/dispelling etc is a much much more active process in this game due to how single-target heavy it is.
Dracthyr Evoker looks to have absolutely tons of AoE and mobility for healing, so maybe that’s the start of them addressing that.
Ooof healing, yeah, it’s quite tricky to make it work on controller where you don’t have mouseover macros.
ConsolePort does have a really nice Raid Cursor feature that many use even in higher content, but I find it really difficult with the size of the raids. I’ll heal whatever in the other game, but I’ll only heal dungeons in WoW (and only with friends).
I believe we are still waiting for the raid frame updates to appear on Alpha? (I don’t remember if they were included in the previews). But I haven’t heard anything about improved/new functionality with them.
Even being able to sort frames by role within groups would be a nice feature to have in base UI - have the tanks and healers in somewhat consistant spots.
