Advice on Gaming Laptop

Amazon is not the best shop for anything IMHO  Compared to normal shops I rate it a disaster when looking for good offers. But the kits are on Amazon or other stores:

Itā€™s 8GB. Ok for WoW only but running some addons or other apps and you likely would want 16GB to have enough. RAM swapping in laptops is common and some laptop/PC dedicated shops offer such service even - they will replace it for you/sell with selected RAM config.

Note: before buying RAM check what your laptop is listed to support. 2933 MHz is default while 3200 MHz for the most part should be supported but there may be models not liking such frequency.

Ok interesting, again, thanks. One more Qā€¦I found the below, thoughts on this given it has 16GB Ram?

Medion Deputy P10 Core i5-10300H 16GB 512GB SSD 15.6 Inch GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Windows 10 Gaming Laptop

depends on the price. The CPU is nothing special for 2020.

For laptop gaming I agree with BigKeg here, Ryzen all the way over Intel offerings. The 4000 series just wipes the floor in performance and should see some discounts coming from those soon as the 5000 laptop series cpuā€™s are coming early 2021.

The other important thing to think about is the speed of the ram inside said laptop and how much is inside of it, considering some of it will be used for the GPU as well. Unless itā€™s got a dedicated card inside of it (laptop) with itā€™s own ram of course.

But for gaming, best is the 4800U/H chip, theyā€™re better than the i5/7/9 you can get in laptops.

Thanks for your reply man, really helpful! I canā€™t seem to find any ryzen 4800 for around Ā£850 thoughā€¦

I did find the below though (intel I know)ā€¦how does that look? Can you recommend any 4800 models?

GRADE A1 - Acer Nitro 5 Core i7-10750H 8GB 512GB SSD 15.6 Inch Full HD 144Hz GeForce GTX 1660Ti Windows 10 Gaming Laptop

any of these cpus are plenty fast to deal with a 1660 ti. the main drawback of going with an intel cpu will be battery life. amd are struggling to meet the demand of the mobile cpus, so it may be hard to find or have a price premium that youā€™re not really well off spending due to the graphics card you have. given equal pricing, go with amd, but donā€™t spend a premium on it. not in this price range.

Thanks - really helpful that. Iā€™ll see what I can find

Thereā€™s Lenovo. Legion 15" Phantom Black. The Ryzen 5 is out of stock but thereā€™s a Ryzen 7 in stock but itā€™s Ā£999. The R5 is Ā£849

https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/Lenovo-Legion-5-15ARH05/p/88GMY501444

They both come with 16gb ram and a 1650 ti graphics.

Thanks! Super helpful - I see the r5 only comes with 8GB ram and only a 1650, not 1650ti.

Would that be ok? This is the Ā£849 option Iā€™m talking about.

if the intel one you listed before is priced similarly, itā€™ll be way faster in games. 1660 ti is way stronger than 1650 ti or 1650.

+41% in time spy graphics score according to this. thatā€™s the max-q 1660 ti as well, so the low power variant, not sure which one was in the one you were talking about. focus on the graphics card first. 8gb ram is kind of unfortunate with any of the models, so thatā€™d be nice to bump up to 16 if at all possible, but otherwise you can upgrade it yourself if it proves problematic as has been explained before.

Great thanks all! Really appreciate the input

Well, the Ryzen5 4600H is out of stock. Only the Ryzen 7 is in stock but itā€™s Ā£999.

Iā€™m sure thereā€™s other makes out there, have to check their sites to see which ones are available and cheaper.

Seems to be that year with everyone stuck indoors that has made people splash out more on various electronic goods.

Itā€™s a bit dearer butā€¦ You have.

Which comes with a 1660TI 6gb graphics but you can upgrade the ram.

Looking at it from another site:

  1. Has spare slot to upgrade ram
  2. An extra M.2 slot
  3. An extra 2.5 inch SSD/hdd slot.

Those are for upgrading for ram and storage.
