Story: “A Late Night Read”

It had taken him a lifetime.

And then a bit, into un-life, no less. But he had done it.

Henry Holster, had long been rumoured to harbor a very special collection of reading materials, and this was chief among them… And now holster was ‘out of the way’, his library had been pilfered and the rewards reaped, along with numerous chests of gold. The Host was no doubt pleased to have had its coffers filled, but Yorold only had eyes for this.

Sitting in a great chair within his cabin, aboard the dread ship Tempest, he eyed the black clothed bundle on the desk. He’d sat like this for an hour,or more. Two decades of hunting had come to this, and despite the rotten state of his stomach, his insides knotted with apprehension. What if it wasn’t as he’d hoped?

No, you’ve come too far. Read.

His hand extended, and with the boney, exposed tips of his fingers he pushed the jet black cloth aside to reveal the prize within. A book, and a horrific one at that. Its great leather hide surface had been blemished, desecrated and decorated with burnt human skin.

The story is true then.

Not long after they had written it, Jack and John Jones had been captured by the mad Pirate King Dastallion, and punished beyond reason by having their faces burned on hot plates before being pushed into the cover. Jack one side, John the other. The smeared flesh had left an impression akin to a screaming face on both sides. They were both then tied to the same cannon and thrown overboard.

Dastallion suffered nobody telling him what to do. In person or by proxy.

The Book itself had been lost for nearly three centuries now, becoming legend and myth. The written contents are almost forgotten, or re-interpreted to such a point as they were not the same. And that was unforgivable, above and beyond permissible.

His right hand slowly, and with enormous reverence opened the book, to the first page. His eyes looked upon an italic hand, written erratically but with great purpose as it had forged the foreword…

codex of the black brother-(and sister)-hood
By Ye(e) hands of J&J.J
As written by the brothers Jack and John Jones, twins and shared captains of the dread ship ‘Siren’ by the year of founding of the principle kingdom and admiralty of Kul’tiras. Whereupon the ship inclined know it alls, chased us out of Boralus with great emphasis toward threats of a noose.

Ye Foreword

“Yee who read this now, know this, beyond this point the man and or woman, or parrot who reads further is given a most laborious task. As we who wrote these words imbibed as we wrote, so must ye drink as thee read the sacred word. For every wisdom read aloud, quoted from this book, a finger of rum must be downed in a neat nautical chug. May the black spot and the dark demise it bring to all who bare it, mark the forehead of thee who do not honor these words… If thou has not worked it out quite yet, you should be downing said shot now and with desperate haste…”

He grinned, a wave of relief washing over him. It was real, tangible, physical. Proof of a lost history, and a shared belief long since forgotten or dishonoured by many.

The Pirate Codex… the code! And it would be his honour to present it to the parlay…

His hand turned the pages, noting many chapters of varying natures…The sanctity of parlay, Conduct while reaving, the Black spot, shares, mutiny, flags, disputes and duels… the Sovereign, and many spaces, and blank pages.

They had not finished it…?

His grin widened, flashing those silver teeth… His mind quickly getting to work with mischief and schemes, of ye unholy behemoths of the depths, such a scheme. Without much adieu, and with great glee, he prepared parchment, ink and quill. Consulted his finest forgery text and poured a grand measure of rum for the undertaking.

It was going to be a long, but very much fruitful night…

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

OOC: So! What’s this? Well, those who attend the parlay, from now until well after, will have the chance to contribute segments of information on important pirate subjects in order to generate and complete (and mostly fill in the large gaps I’ve left) to allow us to have a true pirates code!

Granted, it won’t and should never be compulsory to abide by or follow such, but it never hurts to have a shared bit of fun and something to link us all together a bit more closely.

The text is still very much in the works, but has the following chapters:

  1. “Chapter one - To be a Brother, Sister, Captain or avian companion” (How to be a pirate)
  2. “Chapter undoubtedly of the second - Sanctity of the Parley and its terminologies” (How the high parlay and parlays work)
  3. “A third chapter - The Actions on your part” (pirate conduct, when reaving, and using ships articles)
  4. “Chapter numbered four - Booty and the due sharing therein of” (How to share booty)
  5. “Ch V – Settling of disputes most uncouth” - settling of disputes
  6. “Verse six – The Black Spot and other such” How to be banished and marked from the pirate brotherhood
  7. “7th of the sections marked chapter – Sovereign of the Brotherhood” (How to become pirate King)
  8. “The Eighth reading – The Captains lot” (A captain’s duties and responsibilities)

Of course, more chapters can be added if you come up with something worthy. As you make suggestions, please be sure to remember…

“They’re mostly just guidelines…”

Post anything you come up with here, up until and even after the High Parlay.

Have fun!

Good luck with the event! While I don’t have pirate to attend and currently on server campaign, I think this may be fun for anyone that has any connection with the sea, ships and most of all rum! Always good to see initatives like that being held.
