AI Art as character reference (And now some very unrelated conversation)

Just seen this while strolling about through Stormwind, where somebody is either taking screenshots of people’s characters. using their art, or writing a lot of details about other people’s characters in order to generate AI images in a folder they link in their TRP.

I don’t even know what to say on that, it’s either someone who’s really drunk on the AI Koolaid or is somehow entirely unaware of the many, many, many controversies.

It’s also entirely possible that they simply do not care. Of course no one here will reach out to ask these people why they are using AI artwork, they are simply content to tar and brush everyone with their hoity toity disdain.

That’s a very loose way to describe things. Unregulated usage of AI inevitably supports plagiarism, but anything unregulated can be considered a crime, in various fields and in various forms.

Fact that AI is taking over jobs is simply that, a fact. Important thing that lawmakers will actually commit to setting up the framework to compensate the people that are actually doing the jobs AI will infiltrate/has already infiltrated and make it less like the Wild West.

How soon that will happen? Will it ever happen? That’s the questions that need to be answered.

To whom it may concern, this is making the rounds at the moment. It concerns Adobe. The setting is reportedly checked by default.

It makes me feel icky as an artist because it IS art theft, but I don’t really have the desire to attack people for using it in RP. I’ll just quietly judge them instead.

I wonder, would this result in creation of better AI on account of it learning from the process rather than finished pictures? Because I imagine the “associated data” part includes exactly this, the process of drawing, the brushes used, perhaps mixing of colors (I´m a return to monke kind of guy who struggles to comprehend colored pencils so I don´t really know how artists who use these programs regularly do colors), which means the AI wouldn´t just analyze the picture itself, but also learn how to draw it.

Also the clicked on by default part is pretty scummy but unfortunately very common thing with any program whose creators realize that collection of data is going to make them a ton of money because they know damn well nobody would ever manually enable this option.

That does seem to be the implication. That it’s not “just” the final artwork, but the entire process from blank canvas and onwards.

Stealing one’s artistic fingerprints for cloning, if you like.

Eh, I joked around with AI generated art a few times, generating mostly memes (haha thrall using dragon soul as a dinner plate). Reading this thread is leaving a mighty bitter taste in my mouth. This whole AI thing can be very foul in how it works.
I physically don’t have an opportunity to buy artworks from, like, 90% of artists on the Internet right now, but I’d still restrain from using AI generated art in my TRP or for my characters in general. At least because AI arts turn out strange as hell. And the act itself feels kinda tasteless.

I have used AI art as stand-ins until I can actually afford to comm, so I can show artists what I want. I don’t have it on the profiles now they have art. (edit: for clarifications sake, never had any visible on alys profile, though have tinkered with it on others while getting 'em together.)

I think its a perfectly fine use of a placeholder for a vague mental image.
