Alts is mostly used to get more chances at mount rares and stuff like that 
If an alt is on par with your main, what makes your main the main? 
It’s an excuse to spend more time in the game - but without the pressure of feeling like it needs to be kept up to date.
If I have a few weeks where I need time out of game, it’s fine to ignore all the alts and just get my daily chores done on the raiding main. They’ll be there when I have time again
