Ohhhh is this an American English vs. British English issue?

I’m very interested. I could have said “(the thing) gets underway today” or “(the thing) starts today” or “(the thing) gets going today”.

“Begins soon”? I try to avoid “soon” when the time of something is already known.

I would definitely have written:

The word gets seems unnecessary. Simple is better. As Mark Twain once said to a student:
“I notice that you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English—it is the modern way and the best way.”

Dunno, “gets started” just means something begins (referring directly to its beginning).

Although I see your point that “AWC 2021 starts today” is probably simpler.

I think they should have used gets cracking today :stuck_out_tongue:
