Bastion and Devos

The only flaw I see is in the story writing.

Souls are sent to Bastion due to who they were in life… so only worthy souls reach the Kyrians. But Blizz writers decided that this universe makes no sense. Why would the Kyrians believe that a soul must let go of it’s memories and their past lives to serve the greater good? Those experiences that they are supposed to let go off molded the soul into someone worthy, they are the reasons for which the soul was sent to Bastion. Those experiences allowed the soul to make the right choice at every point in their life, but now they would be a burden in fulfilling their duties???

Then we get to Devos, who considers the path flawed. It’s not right to strip souls of their memories/individuality. Her solution? Send all the souls to the Maw so they can be tortured for eternity. Good job, babe!

So the basis for the conflict is flawed in writing and the potential interesting antagonist who maybe could have a point we could understand, maybe make us doubt our siding with the Kyrian, was hit with the villain bat hard.

“Why would the Kyrians believe that a soul must let go of it’s memories and their past lives to serve the greater good?”

Well, the idea is probably to prevent exactly the kind of thing Devos did with Uther. Because in order to be free of prejudice, you need to be free of your past. Judgment is not yours to pass. No matter who this soul was in life, you carry it to the Arbiter, and for that, you need to remove any potential reason that would cause you to pass a value judgment for one and, as it were “take justice into your own hands”. This is the Kyrian internal logic, before the Uther fiasco happens.

“Then we get to Devos, who considers the path flawed.”

This is where I raged. That’s such a bad example of writing, with everyone carrying the idiot ball. Devos could have simply pushed Uther in front of the assembly and told them “Here, see for yourself!” She’s a paragon, not just a random petitioner who needs to beg the others for their time. In fact, anyone with a functioning brain would have done that. The others actually seeing the wound in Uther’s soul, that would have been a game changer. In fact, anyone with a brain would actually listen to a paragon that’s visibly distressed. But nooooo. The others just act like they never were a team; and Devos just pulls a Sargeras.

I hate it when a major plot point hangs on “everyone’s being an idiot”. It’s like if Xandria would have been told, after the Maldraxxus attack to “Just follow the Path and trust the Purpose”.

So stupid.

This person said everything I would have possibly said. Totally agree!

It was discussed briefly in another thread. So, the thing is, there is no information about how could Shadowlands exist and be so effective for who knows how long, why convenants do what they do, etc.

The memories that kyrians expell from themselves for whatever reason are very similar in the visual representation to what can be seen in the Maw. So what would truly happen should they not ever do it - to be explained. Maybe.

Maybe eventually it’ll be know how she made the transition from being horrified by the Maw to being an ally of the Jailer

When was is not the case in WoW…
IMO a problem at the moment is that different sides can have more or less valid motivation for their action. However, instead of telling the story where we learn bit by bit about how the things became like what they are, the devs seem to think that “plot twists” is the best things to have.

So a lot of significant information that would make sense to figure out early instead is postponed till some point in the future. And given troubled development of some expansions, sometimes this future never appear at all, so story lines left unfinished or do not make much sense.

The greater good for a kyrian has nothing to do with azerothian morality, it is to serve “the purpose” and exist as a tool serving the system laid out before us in the shadowlands, i.e. The arbiter and the roles of the covenants.
