Druid and pala are the nice and easy one’s to learn.
I second this. It is a fairly straightforward spec that does well now and then. Bear in mind you will also be lacking in magic damage mitigation.
I struggle with the Druid class as a whole XD
I think for learner tanks, the most important quality is the ability to pick up aggro from multiple mobs at once, as well as having a simple rotation and not too many CDs.
From easiest to hardest:
- Prot pala. Very easy aggro-pickup with Avenger’s Shield, even from range. Can easily deal with caster mobs. Easy to stay alive with self-heals and bubble.
- Bear. Needs to be in melee range to pick up group aggro, but easy otherwise.
- Prot warrior. Also easy to pick up aggro with Thunder Clap etc. All abilities are intuitive, unlike the tanks below.
- Brewmaster: Keg Smash and Breath of Fire are frontal cone attacks, so it’s easy to miss some mobs and not pick up aggro from everything. Also, lots of buttons and not enough GCDs to press everything.
- VDH. Only has Immolation Aura to easily pick up group aggro, which has a fairly long CD and can’t be spammed. Sigil of Flame also works, but require more skill to aim and time properly. But once you’re comfortable using sigils and know which mobs to use them on, it’s the strongest M+ tank in the current meta.
- Blood DK: Good at pulling group aggro with Blood Boil, but I think BDK is generally not easy for beginners, because it has a lot of buttons, a super complex resource system, and is very squishy if you don’t time your defensives and Death Strikes well.
all of which has cds, so no compared to other tanks, prot warrior is the worst at gathering mobs because it indeed has no spamable aoe abilities where you dont have to target mobs.
with avatar ready it is better but outside? kinda sucks.
you dont want to waste roar or ravager on a 2 mobs somewhere.
the only thing that is okish would be titanic throw but well also not always works.
didnt say it is impossible but in some dungeons it is quite annoying.
Prot pala is strongest pug tank with offheals etc. Bubble is there is you make mistakes. Not super basic though idk. Worth a little effort to learn, not hard either
All tanks but Brewmaster aren’t hard to play.
Most important thing to know your routes (since you are the de facto group leader) and when to pop defensive cooldowns (so you don’t die). Rotation doesn’t even matter that much.
I saw bunch of prot pally and prot war answers. I will give those 2 a shot. There is something very appealing about sword and board tank.
One of us
Ive rolled a character on each tank class.
My personal fav is blood DK. It was the first one i tried and it is my second main if that makes sense.
Warrior and monk are my least fav, brewmaster i have only played in remix.
DH is ok but did feel overwhelming with the amount of abilities. I do enjoy prot pally aswell so my suggestion would be them or blood dk Druid wasnt bad but getting different bear skins felt like a chore lol
Prot Pal is by far more beginner friendly, few buttons, easy rotation and to pack mobs it’s a ballad in the parc. It feels really good in TWW.
Prot War is also easy to handle but as said above, easy rotation and mitigation but it has nothing to pack mobs meaning you need to play with environment and hope your dps are not gonna play blindly. It is also the worst tank in TWW right now.
I started to learn how to tank on a Blood DK and havent stopped playing it since xD, although Vengeance DH is also quite fun tbh
I find bear to be the easiest, but if bears are not your thing then prot paladin is close second.
if you want to be
- mobile
- tanky
- deal decent damage
then play Demon hunter or Druid or Monk
if you want to
- heal loads
- utility
- main tank rather than off tank
then play DK, Warrior or paladin
…
Blood DK feels like cheat mode when I play my DK alt.
But I’m not doing grouped content so I caveat my post somewhat.
Certainly when I’m out doing world content I can solo large packs of mobs or rares quite well. I find it easier than other tanks I’ve tried.
Even soloing old dungeons and raids my DK survives better than my other alts.
yeah i would agree too.
for me my prot pala feels much smoother to tank on then on my DH or most of other tanks - mostly cause it has a lot of cds and so strong self heals.
i would disagree about DH being easy to learn . yes they are simple but you have to really know when to use your cds since those are very very limited.
thats why in low keys you see a lot of DH doing instant splat on pulls
Even when you learn the basics and get used to the spec for a bit, the first couple of GCDs into a pull still feel very scary on Vengeance DH. DH is so easy to go “splat” on within just a few seconds, and the spec doesn’t have a lot of mitigation cooldowns to choose from if things go South.
Without having played Prot Paladin at all this expansion - my subjective list of tanks from lowest skill floor to highest skill floor would be:
- Guardian Druid
- Protection Warrior
- Blood DK
- Vengeance DH
- Brewmaster Monk
The Monk sits in a very special place where you have way too many buttons, and the mechanic of managing Stagger/Brews plus your self-healing can get a bit confusing at times. It feels like spinning plates, and for someone new to tanking, having to keep mobs at bay while trying to figure out when to press which ability is probably not the best choice. It’s fun when you get into it, but can be very frustrating before that, especially if you are new to the entire role.
DH - as said - can feel extremely squishy until you get a feel for the abilities and how to properly engage mobs. Very easy to just die in the first GCD though.
Speaking of fun, my personal very subjective ranking:
- Vengeance DH
- Brewmaster Monk
- Protection Warrior
- Blood DK
- Guardian Druid
For my reasons, DH is just incredibly fun due to the mobility and the CC. Once you know what you are doing and get into a flow the DH feels very robust. Great damage, amazing CC, insane mobility.
The BrM is also quite mobile (although not quite on the same level as Warrior or DH), but the ability bloat kind of keeps me from putting the spec on #1. I still enjoy the spec enormously. Decent set of utility between disease/poison removal, Paralysis, Ring of Peace.
For someone starting out, I feel Warrior sits at a great spot where it has a low skill floor while also being really fun to play. You are not quite as zippy and zoomy as a DH, but it’s a close call. Ultra-mobile, super tough to take down, decent utility between multiple stuns, snares and Fort Shout. I’ve started tanking this expansion on my Warrior to get a feel for the dungeons and I thought it was the ideal spec to get started with. A friend of mine has been maining Prot Warrior since at least Legion and he isn’t tired of the spec yet.
Paladin feels like the more “useful” spec with healing and stuff, but it doesn’t have Heroic Leap. So… Warrior wins
I really enjoy Guardian Druid and Protection Paladin. The others lose their health too much for my liking - Blood Knight gives me the “mini heart attack” feeling a lot because your health just drops then goes right back up! I don’t tank for pugs though, they’re scary.
I like brewmaster most - but the trick to start is to pick more passive talent options over “active” ones - then it’s a free/enjoyable spec.
I should try that on my monk, thx
