Boost spam in trade chat (and the dangers of legitimizing boosting) (update: we won!)

boost spam is just the symptom of the bad state the game is in, you can’t solve boost spam if you first don’t fix the game.

Sorry Kayleen I tend to disagree, boosts have always been in the game, even in expansions that the majority of players would say were the best. Although I do agree with you that the game is not in a good state at present

I hate to say this as I know it causes a lot of debate with few results, but from my personal view, the token was the biggest culprit for the boosts becoming so rife. The token gave players an easy way to make gold without actively farming it or playing the AH etc. And thus many could then afford the boosts.

I’m genuinely curious, do people even use trade chat anymore to sell stuff? It feels like items are all sold on the AH nowadays.

I would surmise that most use the AH, to be honest it would be silly not to Odrihm because if you actually had an item you wished to sell/trade, it would be lost very quickly in the sea of boost ads

I know that many say that boosts in trade are okay and it is a trade service so they are using the correct channel, to be fair I agree. For me it isn’t the boosting as such or the spam in that channel, I opt out of it, it’s the fact there is no real social channel for players who may just want to chat/have fun with others whilst they play. This I think would be an easy fix, the problem would be that such a channel would have to be monitored and I don’t think Blizzard want to put the manpower/resources into that.

So what im seeing is that Blizz should introduce Barrens chat as a global channel
Keep general general tho

I have not checked Global chat for a long time Mezhi, or to be fair General chat as I have not played the latest expansion in some time. But from what I remember, forgive me if I’m wrong’, the boosters were also to be found in those. I think I read on a thread that they were also to be found in the Newcomer channel.

As I said, one channel where you would be guaranteed to have no boosts and to have this monitored, for me personally would be the ideal solution.

This seems like a #HighPoprealmfirstworldproblems

You should come to my main realm “Daggerspine” we are a server group of a total of 12 servers and we still have less than half of the pop of a place like draenor has by itself.

There is very rarely any trade chat talk here.

My Alliance characters are based on Magtheridon, not considered a high pop realm, but the boosters were there too when I last played retail. I don’t know if Magtheridon was considered a higher population than Daggerspine Tholkrad I haven’t checked on realm populations. I appreciate what you are saying, but rerolling to a realm where the spam is not a problem is an expensive fix (if you pay for transfers) although I am sure Blizzard would love the extra income

Last time I tried I wasn’t really bothered by boosters, people were able to see my message clearly, instead I got flamed for trying to sell a BoE sword in trade chat and after copying/pasting my message for over an hour I didn’t have a single person whisper me.

General chat exists but realisticaly Discord has taken over this function over the last few years, people don’t talk much outside of their current party/guild/friends.

Then people are being hypocrital Odrihm, if trade is the correct channel for selling items such as boosting, then it is equally the correct channel for you to sell your BoE sword. But I know what you say is true as I have seen evidence of it, other players telling you to put it in the AH where it should be?

Totally agree, but I would still like an in game option too, yeah I am greedy

Whilst I agree that the token has been somewhat of an enabler of the boosting scene the biggest change I think is the repeatability of content. The addition of M+ and the change to the raid lockout mechanism for raids below mythic difficulty is the biggest cause, in my opinion, of the spike in boosting services.

Gold is practically meaningless to those who have been playing regularly since the mission table was introduced as it caused a massive influx of gold to the general playerbase that up until then had been the reserve of the AH players.

Interesting, I really hadn’t thought of this aspect. Still a conundrum though for me personally, because I then think well if they removed the token and Mythic+ and reverted to previous raid lockout, would the game lose more players or entice enough back?

I personally don’t like Mythic+ because running the same dungeons over and over again did not appeal to me, but I did like raiding, maybe because I did this once or twice a week and it didn’t feel so repetitive. Yet Mythic+ is extremely popular with a lot of players and I can see the reasons.

To be honest I don’t think we as players will ever find a real solution to the boosting scene that would make the whole playerbase happy.

I blocked nova ingame Only for another one to spam trade chat

I think a daily lockout for Heroic and M+ wouldn’t hurt the game that much for those that wish it. Maybe make it so that each key level is it’s own separate instance on the daily lockout so that you could push each day.

I do think that bringing back the old weekly raid lockout for all levels of raid would be a good step.

you’re really typing ban all boosters from trade chat and moderate it at the same time? do you have any clue what trade chat was before boosting? only politics and racist stuff spam, there’s not gonna be a single message in that place if you both ban boosting and attempt to tell someone to moderate it lmao, everyone that thinks people would start selling materials in trade chat or literally any item/service outside of boosting in trade chat is completely delusional

That isn’t what I said at all Geowastaken, I actually said that Trade chat is the place for boosters to offer their services. What I asked for was that there could be at least one chat channel that was free of boost spam and trades, a social channel if you wish so that people do have the opportunity to chat whilst playing. I agree I did suggest it would be moderated, but that is only to stop any boosters who would then see this new channel as a way of promoting their offers, Trade Chat is the place for such offers.

can’t you just use /2 if you want to talk on the map chat? i’m not sure why you would want to do that anyway since no one ever talks in chat in this game, wherever you go orgrimmar/oribos/whatever zone i never see anyone talking in chat, it’s just people in parties/raids or friends in discord

I agree with all that you say but but dont forget CMs of MoP and WoD pre token and Curve brought in for MoP raids really made a huge difference pre token aswell for boost spam .

To be fair Lunestone, boosting has been in the game since the beginning. Although I am not a Vanilla baby, I started to play in TBC, I can assure you it was in the game then, maybe less affordable to most, but still boosting was ‘a thing’. So when did it start to ruin the game?
