I wouldn’t say 100% but a huge part, yes. I was also against it, not sure I posted about it and not sure it would have mattered since Blizzard is notoriously tone deaf to their audience.
I agree, there is no reason to team up with anyone other than raids and dungeons.
And when you do its either with your guild or randoms that you are not gonna see ever again most likely.
And the sharding really ruins it for me since it’s just filled with randoms, a few with names I am not even able to read. Not that I would read anyones name now anyway since I will never see them again.
Even when I’m at the same area as my guildies i still sometimes cant see them because they have been put in another shard while I am standing with people from completely different servers.
I used to remember people on my servers, even people who I never interacted with but just saw frequently. That is not possible anymore.
I recall back in the day, we had a guy on the server that would fish A LOT but instead of using the auction house he would sit under a tree in the city and sell the fish by trade.
Might seem pointless but the world felt alive.
Today you can replace all the people running around with bots and I wouldnt even notice.
I sometimes sent the DM person gold because he was nice to do what he did, But it was never a ”Demand”, Also Warlocks were in the guild so no need to pay there either.
I played mage and Wbuffs were like 15% more in crit, So made the game more enjoyable for sure with all that increased damage.
I only got buffs same day as the raid so i was never offline reserving buffs for very long and only had 1 character in classic , Took too long to level/fgear an other one imo.
Maybe you played the game wrong if the Wbuffs was an inconvinience for you
Real life also sucks.
But WoW is a game. For fun. So forcing is bad in that case, because being forced is not fun.
Yes, and I deal very well with that but it can also be exhausting at times. That’s why I’m grateful for games where the social element exists but is not forced on me.
Comparing games and real life is not an argument in favor of anything. In games choice matters a lot.
Play on grobbulus US
And there is also still plenty of bad behaviour, people run in to tag your mobs, or grab the ore you’re clearly trying to clear to etc.
I’ll always accept group invites if someone is coming up as I’m doing a specific named mob etc but some will just ignore you and kill it solo. Others see you waiting for something and will ask if you want to group.
However outside of ty and gl bb etc there isn’t really any meaningful interactions. If you are questing with others there is probably a lot more opportunity for chat, especially as the game play is so slow. Levelling with others, however, is my worst nightmare, I tend to prefer to be able to come and go as I please.
I enjoy doing proper group activities with others like dungeons, raids etc but when I’m levelling I want to be able to waste time going back to Silvermoon or go get my training sorted etc. I want to be able to afk in the inn as and when I need to or out in the open world.
Even in Retail there are very few people I can cope levelling with via questing but dungeon levelling in groups is fine. People do that in Classic too.
I know exactly what you mean, OP, and I encourage you to completely ignore all the people saying that this most core and essential aspect of MMORPG’s is a bad thing in an MMORPG. You’re 100% right, and WoW can’t do it any more because Blizzard listened far too much to people who played MMORPG but didn’t really understand what that meant, and Blizzard knows this and they don’t know how to roll it back. It’s a crying shame.
I’ve made hundreds of ideas for how to fix this, but they all invariably involve some sort of reset - a new, isolated server with special rules for instance, or just plain taking stuff away. I don’t see it happening, regrettably…
WoW Classic Season of Mastery definitely has some of what you’re looking for but… it’s just Classic over and over again, so yeah.
If you want to do end-game content you are forced to level up to max level, if you want a piece of gear you are forced to typically complete X-PvP/PvE objective.
The overwhelming majority will naturally choose the path of least resistance, so what do you think were to happen to raiding if people could have all the gear they want sent in their mail, or any achievement, or whatever else carrot there is.
Forcing social interactions to create a community is not any different than forcing you into raiding for your gear. Force isn’t really even the right word as you aren’t forced to do anything, not even play this game in the first place, just like there is no real choice as you like to call it, seeing as people will just take the path of least resistance.
Again, maybe your idea of “fun” is without a community, but a lot of people enjoy that aspect and it’s not really the fault of the playerbase that this has been lost, it is the environment Blizzard created with conveniences that came at a steep price.
