Discussion about night elven culture & most fitting classes

Did. They were all banished and became High Elves as they moved there. It should be noted that, in Warcraft 3, Suramar was an ancient city sunk beneath the ocean and the Broken Isles had been raised only recently, so Nightborne just wasn’t a thing.

So there literally were no Night Elf mages. They were all banished or had been killed.

I don’t think that’s surprising at all. We are human, and when you start running statistics on humans you will immediately find that women are more nurturing and men are more protective on average and more often like to take charge, so seeing an over-representation of men playing DPS and especially tanks and an over-representation of women playing healers is not surprising to me in the slightest.

Of course, as always when saying this kind of stuff, I must make it clear that I am talking about averages. Of course there are female tanks and male healers all over the place, and more power to all the players who choose to that; I am an individualist fundamentally, but the statistics are what they are and are easy to explain all the same.

But Night Elves are not human even if the players playing them are, and that is precisely why it was so unique and interesting to break that stereotype. Oh well.

I don’t think making a culture in a game better makes the game better. A cruel culture can make for some really interesting storytelling and gameplay - the Witcher is a perfect example of this. Horrible culture; homophobic, xenophobic, close-minded, abusive, medieval in every way, patriarchal, and full of power-hungry nasty aristocrats. Now, to be fair, Geralt will tend towards mingling with people who are bad in some way, which is why they get monsters around them and it’s his job to clear them out, so certainly it’s portrayed to be worse than it really is, but nevertheless - I think making that game’s culture purer would degrade it. The game works because the culture is so awful.

But cultures will always move forward, or change, for better or worse - unless you isolate from the rest of the world entirely, which a section of the night elves actually did for a period in time - which I guess is the phase in their history that you find exciting. But it is not their origin, nor their present. It would be impossible to maintain that culture within the whole population whilst having a number of night elves embarking on quests throughout the world.

Much like the case of arcane magic - had they never banned arcane magic, their history and past culture would be very different. It can be considered an interesting phase, but coming back to my original question, I do not think that one phase in history is a definitive element when considering a fitting class for a male night elf, or a female night elf in the present time. Perhaps if you want to role play a night elf that was born in that period in time it would make sense, though.

I don’t even know what you’re talking about anymore.

I’m talking about the coolness factor of a, by the way unchanging for 10000 years, culture in a video game having been lost. I’m not talking about how cultures evolve IRL or how things get better or worse or politics or anything else. It’s just an opinion on what Blizzard did with Night Elves, that’s it.

At no point did I deny that the culture had been changed and at no point did I argue that it made sense for it to not change. I just thought it was cool. >_>

I didn’t mean to argue with you, I just find this a fascinating topic for discussion. I get your point of view completely, though.
