But Fel is the magic of chaos.

it sure is.
My opinion is that the most powerful depends on what you’re trying to do.
The Light is versatile, you can throw hammers with it or empower yourself by a large margin and even mend others’ wounds.
Arcane on the other hand can do that not; but it can conjure portals or let you cast flames.
Fel is a literal powerhouse, letting you use great lengths of dangerous power in little time.
Shadow can toy with others’ minds or place curses on them. And death magic corrupts the cycle of life and creates undeath.
So from there, a shadow priest could drain your mana or a druid can shapeshift into a bird and travel massive lengths.
So, there is at least one instance where a kind of magic can do what the other can’t, or can do, but better.
It’s a huge case by case basis in terms of power and kinds of power (defensive, offensive, utility)
Voodoo because praise the Loa.
I’m not sure what type of power we’re discussing here; destructive powers?
Then I’m inclined to say Void or Fel, yes.
Over time and time again we have seen how Fel and Void magic are the greatest dangerous forces out there. Void is so destructive it can obliterate demon souls and prevent them from regenerating in the nether. In some dialogues it is hinted that fel is stronger than arcane (in terms of pure potency) or atleast more destructive. Void seems just as dangerous, if not more.
On the other hand, the Light and the Arcane have a variety of ways in which they can affect the world in such a way that Void and Fel simply can’t. Healing with fel or shadow magic is unlikely (as both acts against the principle of life that is bound to the Light, I suppose), but with the Light you can both smite and heal your foes.
Arcane usually doesn’t heal either but you can circumvent the normal in so many varieties that fel magic never properly relies on: illusions and transmutation and so forth. However, arcane is also known to deny and counter fel to some degree: demon hunters have arcane tattoos rather than fel, you have Medivh absorbing fel magic out of orcs and draining them of life and then you have the short story of the ogres, in which their runestones (arcane in origin) could counter fel magic.
Edit.
I’d say death magic can be powerful, but isn’t remotely close to the levels of fel or the void.
Nature magic deserves a special mention: it is highly resourceful and lone druids alone have been capable of defeating a Sargeras-possessed Xavius and an army of black drakes. I’d say it terms of raw power it can’t catch up with a cosmic force but when it comes to fighting on Azeroth, where you can rely on the world around you, it is possibly one of the most insidious forces you can unleash (see how Archimonde was defeated by a young Malfurion).
Overall my guess is that relying on the strenght on your magic, claiming it should somehow beat another magic, isn’t much of a brilliant idea.
If we base it simply off in-game feats then death is by far the most powerful in terms of pure force concentration.
While fel and void cause more widespread destruction, Fury of Frostmourne is an example of how absurdly deadly death magic can be when focused.
I vaguely recall the Highborne of Suramar saying Fel was the most either powerful or destructive magic they knew of. Which to me makes sense, and Arcane being the more versatile in comparison anyway.
It probably comes down to what the story needs in a given scene though.
I think death magic is powerful but doesn’t reach the levels of fel or void. Fury of frostmourne was released against a group of mortals who were fairly weak targets for today’s standards.
In Legion we can notice how certain wotlk Ulduar bosses like Thorim require help from the adventurer and players seem to fight on equal terms with the raid boss of old. And so on: characters speculate that the blades of the fallen prince are even more powerful than frostmourne itself.
Shadow-based abilities like the Darkness of a Thousand Souls were, much like the fury of frostmourne, an instant kill in TBC but have since been resisted by the Legion adventurers.
If I were to find a situation in which death magic stands toe to toe with arcane and maybe surpasses it, that would be with Argus the Unmaker, where he seems to use death-based spells. But even there his magic is countered by the titans’ without too much difficulty (Golganneth’s storm for example).
Seems that if they have their Seat of the Pantheon handy however, Sargeras is fairly easily pacified?
In terms of sheer combat power, I would wager it’s either conjuration, because of the sheer flexibility of the stuff that it can create out of nothing, or evocation, because it’s hard to argue with a fireball to the face—
…Oh, not those schools.
Arcane. For reasons shared above, as well as chronomancy.
That’s Arcane.
They used what was left of Argus to imprison him, didn’t they?
I literally start the comment by saying arcane lol
Friendship is the strongest magic.
Thanks Tombford Sparkle.
As many have said, they all have a niche of sorts. But as a general rule, it seems to be that Fel and Void are the most “powerful” the level of destruction and sheer corruption these forces have been responsible for, trumps the feats of other magic schools.
Was that mentioned somewhere? I mean it makes more sense than Magic Chairs™ but I don’t remember ever reading it before.
