DPS Range classes

I have a hunter at 70 on MM - did up to 6+ only - and even I am not a pro DPS player, it’s very hard to be bad with MM. IMO it’s an easy, fluid spec with easy to understand rotation, decent aoe and single target damage - my only issue with the class as a whole is the poor self sustain. True, we have tank, leech pets, but it’s not much and in dungeons you don’t have pet out because of the 10% dmg buff.

I like my hunter, very independent laidback class, but I simply don’t fancy the lack of self sustain - especially after playing BDK

I notice you don’t mention shadow priest, I guess because it’s the only priest dps spec and because it’s a bit dark. It’s not doing badly for casual and normal content at the moment and the rotations are ok. I don’t know how it is for higher level content.

I didnt mentioned it because I saw it has a lot of buttons and it looked very confusing to play it or even read it the guides. Also I see its not recommendable for new players.

That surprises me. Maybe it’s complex for higher level players but I’m a low-down casual and I cope with it.

I am glad that you dont have problems with it. I tried it at lower levels but not later, what people say is that its a “piano” spec, a lot of buttons to press and CDs/DoTs to track. But that was in SL, didnt tried it in DF with changes.

This would be my personal rating. I mainly play world map and epic BG’s, I haven’t got into M+ or raiding yet as I don’t have a guild and I like to keep my sanity with the looting system in Pug LFR which sucks.

1st MM Hunter, slightly better at taking damage, nice range which can vary depending on your mastery % mine is currently around 45yds (none of this 30-35yd range dragon has), very easy rotation to understand/execute, Pet usability varies from what you have which helps depending on what you are doing, good movement utility and great for single target dps. DPS wise depending on what you do and the parties ilvl in epic BG’s I’m around 10-20m total damage, nearly always in top 15. for the very few DF dungeons I have done im nearly always 3 or 4th outside of bursting, when bursting I can be top. Again I mainly spec’d my MM hunter for single target dps with only 2 spells that hit more than 1 target incase add’s are close to tank/boss.

Downside I would say is defensively it could be a bit better but then again if anything gets too close you need more damage, also focus (hunters resource) management along with maintaining pet hp to help tank mobs. Stealth ability is good and bad at the same time. If your pet is still in combat you are unable to use stealth. When you can use it the spell is great but only ever used it a few times myself just to speed questing up that’s all.

2rd Arcane mage Fairly similar to the list below from what I can remember but been a good few weeks since I played it. Harder rotation than Frost mage but can have a higher overall dps if played properly. (Only really played Arcane mage during levelling so can’t give a true opinion on end game rating)

3rd Frost Mage. Nice movement with double blink, Teleports are handy as hell for map boss mount hunting. Very nice aoe skills mixed with good aoe CC’s. again a nice 40yd range as well. Good for levelling from scratch with a few heirlooms. Mage has no real issue with mana resource management in DF and Frost Mage has a easy rotation to learn than Arcane.

Downsides it’s a mage so survivability isn’t the greatest but you do have some good aoe cc and mobility to help combat this along with a bubble(shield) and the ability to turn to ice to regen hp. Mana buns just suck since you have to sit and eat them unlock the warlocks Health stones which are just click and done. Also going full frost will hurt you if you play PVP due to being constantly CC’d blocking the use of the frost magic school if you get interrupted.

4th BM hunter. Good sides see MM hunter.

downsides again maintaining pet hp, relying on those same pets to do the bulk of your damage.

5th Fire mage No real good sides nearly always low down on the dps listings. Think it’s still in the game because maybe it was good at 1 time but since I started in SL it was never any good.

Degree in rotarology lol

I have an arcane mage alt and I’ve got it down to only 5 buttons to press in the right order before starting my burst window

For me SP has a low skill floor but high skill ceiling - I can learn the basics but getting it to shine in terms of talents, rotation etc is pretty challenging (but then Im low skill.)

What do you mean by low skill exactly?

personally i would recommend warlock. Hunter does have different speccs but personally i just cant get into survival or bm. And i heard mm is losing its double tap ability so its probably going to suck

with warlocks you get your tank and some nice utlity as well. warlock candies always are welcome both out in the world and in dungeons or pvp

Thank you very much for this output, much appreciated. You showed pros and cons from your perspective which is always great to hear. Beside these classes/specs, have you tried something else (range) that you liked or left the good impression on you?

to what he said, if you pick mm hunter you can do it without a pet at all if you choose the lone wolf talent wich increasess dmg when you got no pet active. so if you dont always like pets or they might ninjapull stuff in dungeons then no pet is pretty amazing

By low skill personally I mean I like pvp but very low rating, I casually do dungeons and LFR/ a bit of normal. I’m not competitive so wont be able to climb things like M plus or arena rating.

In terms of SP I mean low skill floor- easy to get basics — apply dot, build insanity, spend insanity. High skill ceiling: understand optimal talents, optimal rotation, utility and when to use it (like dispel)

Yes, it is a classic build-spend spec, but to play it on higher level you really need to put some time and also requires skill, as you said.

I like the whole fantasy about priest, old gods, light-shadow style, etc., but I dont see myself playing it in a long run, mostly because I am not huge fan of discipline playstyle and if one of other 2 specs is at the bad spot youre forced to heal or dps.
