I’d call it spite
in terms of what SHOULD have been mail, it is DH as it broke the 3/3/3/2 and created 3/3/4/2 instead.
That said, neither should be mail now, it doesn’t suit the classes and changing it would be pretty bonkers imo.
However, any NEW class should 100% be mail.
It would have been logical in terms of dividing up loot to have an extra mail class. It doesn’t matter so much when it’s tier tokens but for actual drops it’s a pain.
Mail doesn’t really look like mail most of the time so it wouldn’t really have mattered to add another class to it IMO. It’s not like you really think oh yes Monks would totally wear leather, they seem more cloth like to me, same with hunters, do they really need mail, possibly the melee ones.
Well, they can just change it you know, what’s the most work that can be done? The best way to do it would be to allow the lucky class to access both mail and leather gear.
If druid, you could probably have Guardian and balance use mail armor - just like warriors could actually use 2H swords dual wielding.
If DH, I would imagine mail would be useable on the vengeance spec… but they’d have to decide whether it was worth splitting the specs so, I think it has a simple logic to it.
Is that even a thing? For all we know they strip before shapeshifting, and if their leather can be a part of them, why not cloth or scale armor - also from animals for a tougher hide Bear or Moonkin? What about DH literally tanking in his skin when he morphs - wouldn’t matter if it was mail underneath or lather. I think the idea is that in the forms the clothes don’t play a part, their stat value is purely gameplay mechanics.
And thus for gear gameplay mechanics of loot distribution, elevating one of the to mail would also do well.
As others have said, hunters didn’t need mail, but hey, atm, shaman, hunters, druids and dh have melee specs, and both the the leather wearers have half of their specs at heavier armor.
Better to remove mail and to re-tag existing mail armour as leather.
Gear distribution makes 4 armor classes more sensible, especially if more classes are incoming.
Yes please, then my hunter can actually look more huntery by using leather. Especially use the THUNDERLORD SET (You know, the clan filled with hunters, and then they made the effing set LEATHER?!)
I don’t think Blizzard even knows what mail is, considering they decided it’s made with leatherworking and not blacksmithing. It’s just glorified leather made of scales or something.
Light - cloth, medium - leather, heavy - plate. Chain-mail as visual detail can be used for both plate and leather set’s.
That is how i see the " new approach " to armor items.
This makes a lot of sense, especially since there are only two classes that use it, which makes player crafted mail tend to be (more) expensive.
You could even make shaman a cloth wearer by default while giving them the ability to wear leather if they go enhance (although this would mean 2 full sets of gear to multispec, which would be a massive pain).
None.
Druid doesn’t use armor at all, they rely on their “skin” which is leather.
DH are to agile with their jumps to use mail
tbh it seems more reasonable for me to remove mail and make Hunter and Shaman Leather…
mail was worn under plate armor, it doesn’t make much sense to be worn alone and it doesn’t fit these classes either
new classes don’t fit mail, so they end up with something different, but let’s be honest, if Shaman or Hunter were introduced now, it’d not fit mail either and would end up in leather as well…
it’s actually unfortunately very seen on the armor design, that they try to make it look mail and then hunterish or shamanish as well, and those two themes collides and don’t fit very well… and when they ignore classes and just make mail, like now in this season, it doesn’t fit neither sham, nor hunter
Honesty, I think they should make shaman cloth and hunter leather instead. Mail can be an option for warriors where you get greater mobility but less defence. They always looked like this was the case anyway in art. Mail just goes away.
But it puts the game in an awkward position for sure. What happens to all that legacy armour? Tier sets are easy of course, but which pieces go to which type? Idk. Maybe it’s easier to make them both leather.
I think it’s better to just make mail into leather, as it makes sense for shamans and hunters to wear it.
It’s just… we get so many leather wearers. Won’t it be like half of the classes wearing leather?
More than half, yeah. But shamans fit leather - and how would they do with their tier sets? Make double? One leather, and one cloth version?
Monk should be cloth by the way, but so late in WoW’s life they didn’t want to retroactively put in cloth gear that gives physical stats too, probably.
Well, that’d be easy to fix - just add Agility on all Cloth items, and just make it greyed out on intellect users, just like they did with every mail/leather/plate items back in WoD.
I am totally sure if they introduced Monk after the gear changes in WoD, they would have taken this route.
But since it was already in the game in MoP, they couldn’t just mess with it and make them wear cloth from then on. Just how rogues and warriors can still equip ranged weapons for example, despite being literally useless for them in the current game.
I wish they could let 'em equip it in a cosmetic slot, tbh.
Just like how I wish I could dual-wield some axes on my BM Hunter, just for the looks of it (without it giving me stats). I’m sure many RPers would enjoy this as well.
