I like faction conflict, but the Alliance vs Horde conflict is just outdated and depleted in terms of ideas at this point.
I’d like Blizzard to make two new factions that you don’t pick on character creation, but you join them while playing the game and these factions are in opposition to eachother. Like Covenants, only not lame. For example you pick if you side with the Light or with the Void.
Or how niche toys in the game allowed you to become a neutral faction that is an enemy of both factions (MOP Ordon faction, Legion Aviana faction, BfA Nzoth faction).
I think people and devs need to decouple story and gameplay choices:
For the general health of the game, cross faction play on everything is important.
For the general health of story and character development, faction conflict and friction can be very useful writing tools.
Problem is, writing is inefficient. When Horde and Alliance ships arrived on Kaz Algar, there’s only a little bit of silly rivalry. Boring, not cool. Remember when Garrosh literally went on and did a 1v1 with Varian Wryn whilst about to meet in neutral grounds (Dalaran) during WotLK? Exciting cool. Factions weren’t on a full blown open war, but there was conflict whilst focusing on dispatching a common enemy. The former is bad writing, the latter is better writing.
And once again, battle grounds aren’t canon events. They’re just a game mode, treat them as such, to add content in the game. Think of a bit like resurrection spells. In canonical lore, they’re extremely hard to cast and even the most talented priests/druids/etc struggle performing them (hence why I think we’ve only had 2 legit resurrections in game so far? Not counting being raised into Undeath). For gameplay reasons, every healer can cast these.
They should make open world pvp more exciting and rewarding somehow.
I am a long term Night Elf player and I am so glad that at least one person who plays Horde gets my resentment and anger at the game and how it’s trying to now brush those two genocides under the carpet and become some kind of “lets all be friends” simulator or some other stupid my main she’s gone from hunting down demons to now fanatically hunting any and all horde that cross her path and for her at least she won’t let it go at any cost.
For me, it is that personal and as for the writers they don’t know what realism is oh right so 10 years passed to a Night Elf that’s a mere second of time given how long they can live for.
Again, I appreciate you taking this stand on something that for me is quite emotive from a role play perspective.
While (As a 20-years Night elf main, the forums picked my alt for some reason) i agree with your sentiment, and am still awaiting any display of coolness (Or even mere competence) for NEs in general, the only result of renewed faction war would be the Night elves getting kicked around to make the Horde seem somewhat threatening yet again, because they’re conveniently close to the Horde heartlands.
That’s all we’d get out of it, a third massive invasion, while it’s galling that we just forgive and forget (Especially the apparent ease with which it’s done, with that tea party after Amirdrassil raid), losing the last two or three buildings the Night elves have left still seems even worse to me.
I’m hoping that, after the void-trilogy, we’ll get a revamp of EK and Kalimdor, by then it will have been decades of lore-time since Cataclysm, a lot can (And frankly, should) change since then.
I totally get it.
While I’m not that invested in role play, I still enjoy a good story and I used to enjoy Warcraft lore a lot.
It baffles me how people here want the Alliance to just “move on and grow up” so they can face the next big threat hand in hand. I don’t want to get political, but I doubt these people have the same expectations for the actual people under a genocide right now.
A genocide is the worst kind of crime one there is. It’s straight up stupid to have the Alliance forgive it TWICE, especially after the whole Varian speech to Vol’jin: “next time, we will end you” - yeah whatever I guess.
WoW has “wasted potential” vilains. Remember the BFA Azshara cinematic, with N’zoth as a fish and how cunning and composed he seemed to be? He had been hyped as this great manipulator, a mastermind shaping the events of the world from the shadows. Turns out he was yet another big angry baby shouting the same generic threats we’ve heard a thousand times before. What a letdown.
Yes, most of the killing must happen on the blue side, it’s true.
I’d still be really happy to see Thrall dead though. It’s long overdue, and we have enough peacemonger characters as it is.
The people in this video game are still people. They are designed to share the same general feelings and emotions that we feel.
Those characters being able to shoot fireballs from their hands is MORE realistic than the idea of them being able to move on after two literal genocides back to back. It completely destroys my suspension of disbelief.
It’s mostly because we pretty much know that said war will kick off with the Alliance (Probably the Night elves again, they still have a few buildings left, after all!) getting their butts kicked in again in the early war, and for Horde consequences being mostly off-screen (Or in muscle-sprainingly cringe cinematics), not quite coincidentally, that’s also the reason why most people advocating for more faction war are Horde players.
You can say “Forgiving genocide twice is stupid!”, but the only thing that keeping on fighting will get us is a third genocide, and that’s a big “No thanks” from me.
You can have most of the Alliance leaders though, most of them are such simpering weaklings, they make Baine look like a Warmonger…
Same here. A fresh new main world would be nice.
Hopefully with various evergreen content.
Unless they actually do go for the ‘everything beyond BfA is not real and N’zoth is manipulating our actions’ idea. Leading eventually to us breaking free from ‘the matrix’.
We probably should of known better than to respond to one of these threads, Monday morning tiredness for ya! Now I’ll get notifications about this nonsense for days.
