[Forum Fun] The Name Game

Pretty much this.

Faelenn is born from me toying with the names Fay and Lin; Fay, because of its association with Elves, fairies etc; Lin, because I liked the sound of that name. You change some letters around to make it more fantasy sounding and suddenly you end up with Faelenn, which I was quite satisfied with.

Completely unintended, but fun nonetheless, I learned later that the root Fael means “gleaming of the sun” in Sindarin, so Faelenn’s name can (with some minor tweaks) be roughly translated as “woman that shines like the sun” in Sindarin, which is very appropriate for her, as she is a devout follower of the light and her hair is a golden blonde, reminiscent of sunlight.

What is the inspiration behind your character’s name?

Honestly? I wanted a name that sounded a bit like ‘water’.

Twiluna and a vulp=Twiwuna

Twiluna=Twilight+Luna

…Luna is best pony

Only the greatest BG of all time, naturally.

Most of my names came from books or are plays upon other stuff.

Desartin is a one-time-only mentioned noble in wheel of time who got killed for being a richard. And because by that time I already had Hargorin, his brother, and so I wanted a name that fit with that. His surname, Greymantle, also the surname of Hargorin, came from simply throwing Greymane and Mistmantle together to get a Gilnean name.

Hargorin my worgen, and Salfalur my death knight are named after two dwarves from Markus Heitz’ novels “The Dwarves” and are both members of the Third Clan of Dwarves, who have a vendetta against the other dwarves and want to murder them all. And Salfalur’s monniker, Lifebane, was earned during the assault on Quel’thalas. Elves will probably not like him very much once they find out how it was earned.

My very, very first wow-character ever, Durthang, was named after one of the fortresses that Frodo and Sam come past during their travels through Mordor.

Togrin Giantheart was named after the dying orc found by Rexxar, which kicked off the warcraft 3 frozen throne bonus campaign. Mogrin, the actual name was taken already. And Giantheart because he is Warsong and sought to emulate his leader Grommash to atleast some degree.

Lunarglade just sounded Moon Priesty.

Erena was a product of me watching all eight seasons of the Vampire Diraries just before.

Guilty there myself. Vervain (also known as verbena) being a key plant in the series, though further research did redeem me somewhat. According to the Victorian language of flowers, the plant represents enchantment and sensibility. Things I could see in my character.

Of course I have my actual main RP character as well, but in terms of inspiration taken from elsewhere, Vervaina would have to be the only one. Vervain + Verbena = Vervaina.

Gonna just post that and say that my character’s age on AA is “nearing old age”.

Persephone Belvoire was my Nightborne that I played for most of BFA.

I wanted a name from the Greek mythos but also got inspired by Persephone (a character from the Matrix trilogy)

“Belvoire” is a brand of drink cordials in the UK.

Uh…

Just google I guess.

I only knew that as a plant from the Witcher truth be told!

When I made the character I looked at a lot of possible goblin names, but eventually I chose Gridcog. Just Gridcog. Is it the first name? The last name? A nickname? An alias? WHO KNOWS? I purposefully left my goblin with just one name to raise those questions. It’s actually got its IC backstory reasons, but that’s a secret.

Gridcog does kind of have a second name in the form of his occupational title of Foreman.

Imelda sounds pretty and Glamrock is Glamrock.

The fact that she’s an Imelda who primarily wears purple with a husband she had no idea of if he had died or just left her behind has nothing to do with the movie Coco, but I like the coincidence.

I’d just read Frankenstein and planned to do an event themed around the concept with ‘Wretch’ taken from the various names attributed to Frankenstein’s creation.

The event fell through but I kept the name and went on to form a character around a flimsy excuse to use it IC. I just really enjoy the word.

Huge bears

Wanted to combine something stupid/unintelligent (“hurr durr”) with orcish.

“Hurr” + “Gash” = orcishly stupid

…or is it stupidly orcish?
hurr i need a beer

Distant Peak was the name of a kodan I once RPd in GW2.
I liked how the name sounded and thought it fit with the tauren, but with the tribe name being that they would only camp where they could see the distant peak of Hyjal. :man_shrugging:
