Forums survey on pet battling

This is mostly what I do regarding pet battles.

Most of the achievements require very specific pets, which are usually rare and / or expensive due to that very reason, Except for the elemental pets achievements which are completed by the same boring overpowered combo every time, for some interesting reason, which is why I never bothered with them.

I feel like pet battling could’ve had potential, if it were a little more “build your own team to beat this interesting challenge” and a little less “look up which very specific team of 3 you need to beat this insanely overpowered pet”.

Yup, I do more on the weekly events for obvious reasons. But I need to for all the tokens.
Not so much pvp.

Gotta get em 25 AND rare quality, why settle for less when you can have the best?

1385 unique pets, 1379 max level.
I need about 300 rare pet stones to get on board with those. The only pets I’m probably never going to get are the pvp pets, and the ones that require me to travel back in time to before I started playing kek.

But for what I’m actually able to get i’m quite proud of my collection.

tried it but it just gets on your nerves after a while

i find that not knowing what pets and in what order they appear to be very irritating.
Also, haste and the order in which opposition pets attack is very annoying.
certain pets having certain resistances to certain attacks is okay but can be quite sporadic as to how weak they are to attacks of the same form.
You need addons to tell you when to attack, what with a what specific pet to use … thats very irritating.
Also, i have nothing but hatred for pet battling now because that damn pandaland quest to kill the 4 elite elementals cannot be dropped … so all my chars now have that quest (account wide quest) and i cannot complete it and i cannot abandon it.

i will always collect new pets as i see em, i will not go searching for em and i gave up battling because of the requirements to know what to use and when and which one and blah blah blah … irritating.

Do you pet battle regularly ?
Yup!
Have you tried pet battling in the past , found it wasn’t for you?
Nope I quite like the pet battle dungeons!
Do you like to just collect the pets? Do you lvl them up at all or happy to have them at lvl 1 ?
I mostly level the ones needed to do the dungeons but when pet battle event is up I try to level others too!

Myth!

You really, really, REALLY don’t.

There are a few very specific Family battles (where you have to win using only one family) where this is close to true.

What actually happens is this: a few people - the prolific strat-setters - set out to create 100% strats and publish them.

Now, if I’m creating a strat to publish, you know what I don’t want to do? I don’t want to require an S/S breed Runelight Leaper, which almost nobody has, and then half of them don’t have the S/S breed. I’m going to find a way to get it done with the most common pets I can, and those with the least chance of breed confusion (because people who don’t know about breeds so often leave nastygrams when it doesn’t work for them with the wrong breed, and they don’t understand why.)

I did all the achievements without looking anything up (except getting a hint on a pet to use from one strat for Bredda Magic in Legion - and then as a penance for my weak moment I wrote the definitive strat for Bredda Flying)

It can be, if you want it to be. But who has the energy to keep coming up with new teams to beat the daily WQ grind when you already have a known-perfect strat in your Rematch?

What we actually need is what Linaria already wrote above:

with rewards appropriate for challenge battles like this.

I only play World of Warcraft for Pet Battling and Archaeology. Without those things I wouldn’t even buy a sub. Been like it since MoP.

Which is like 40-50 achievements. Not counting the pvp ones there.

Now there’s what? Roughly 10 Pet battles in each of those achievements? Even if only one in 10 of those fights requires a specific pet, it’ll end up being obnoxious and not worth the time nor the effort.

And well, most of the time, they do require at the very least a raid pet, a shop pet, an anniversary pet, or something along those lines. Sure maybe some of them only need 2 out of 3 specific pets, some only need one, but none of those achievements are easily done with just pets you’ve found while running around the world.

Which is honestly my greatest critique towards them. If I wanna do an achievement, I don’t want to farm a 1% drop chance pet from a weekly lockout raid that costs 500k on my dead servers auction house.

Hell I’ve attempted a fair bit of them, but unless you’re very deep into the matter, and have very overpowered pets, because as we know, some are straight up trash, there’s no way to get them. And if you look up the recommendations on other websites, 50-75% of them recommend at least 1 or 2 pets that are the same for a lot of the fights (see Spawn of Gnathus or Hydraling for aquatic battles), which then usually are not just open world catches.

Check my armory and pet collection and there’s your answer

Yes, I do pet battles and collecting pets, as well as PvP. I do not really enjoy it, but as an achievement hunter I have to get the pet achievements over with.

Right now, I’m trying to think of any battles that still require any out-of-the-ordinary pets … and I’m having trouble.

I went back to Legion. Apparently Gloamwing Aquatic is no longer a problem, since the Chitterspine in BfA.

But if you are complaining about needing Spawn of G’nathus or Hydraling, I have to blink a bit, because I consider those pretty common pets. Spawn of G’nathus has a 90%+ drop chance. Hydraling is a guaranteed drop for every character.

But if you want to do the Family achievements, you do need to have a few hundred pets levelled to be adequately “geared” for the content.

I could’ve also mentioned Iron Starlette, Lil’Bling or the Darkmoon pets (or even worse Clockwork Gnome), but those aren’t drops per se, so I mentioned the first drops which are commonly used in family battles that I could think off.

I’m sure somebody more informed on the topic can mention a fair bit more pets that are raid drops. My best guess would be the dragonkin achievements probably needing raid drops, because there’s a ton of dragonkin pets in raids. Chrominius perhaps? That’s a decently strong pet.

Then that, rather than “very specific pets”.

I have about 400 unique pets, with enough marks to boost any pet at any given time, yet the pet family achievements are still insanely far out of my grasp, because I never bothered actively farming pets.

Yes, Chrominius is a strong pet, and one of the most common. Good drop rate from Blackwing Lair, and so typically just a few hundred gold on the AH.

Here’s the list of most used pets in strats:

Yeah, I do think it’s your roster size and state of levelling rather than unreasonably specific pets that is holding you back from the Family achievements. There is nothing that requires a Shop pet. There is nothing that requires a TCG pet. There is nothing that requires a PvP pet, or one of the rare drops.

When I ask Xu-Fu’s to list the pets I would want for Family Exorcist using the standard strats

it spits out about 250 pets, that I need to have as Blue 25s, and usually in the best breeds. That feels about right, give or take. I’m sure that with some work, I could do it with fewer, say 120-160, but that would require some experiment and experience.

While everything else can be done with about 50 pets total, the Family achievements require you have a pretty full bench in each of the 10 families. That’s kind of the point of the Family achievements - to show that you have developed your roster enough that you can beat any battle using only one family.

No

Yes, I enjoyed the Celestial Tournament and probably did most of my pet collecting around that time.

I never say no to a new pet, but I don’t actively go out and farm them anymore, so yes some at level 1 or low levels. I found the levelling process for pets a little tedious (even with the safari hat) and eventually I just stopped doing it.

I think it is a fault in myself for losing interest, I tend to get bored quickly, it’s like the turtle to the water quest, at first I thought how cute, a couple of months later I was thinking, who cares if they make it or not

It was great though when we hit Nazjatar that I had a sufficient stable of pets to do the pet quests and gain rep faster.
