How do you follow the story campaign?

WoW has had a linear story campaign since at least WoD, maybe even as far back as Cata depending who you ask. Yes there will always be side quests but the main campaign (shield quest marks) is very linear.

I think you misunderstand the issue here. The issue is that all stages of the campaign unlock at the same time, so you might do the storyline in the wrong order. I saw the same thing when doing it on my alts this week.

I understand what they mean. I agree that it can be presented better.

But for most players they just want to jump into the latest content, which means jumping in at the latest questline aswell. Once the newest stuff is cleared they then have the option to go back and do older less relevant stuff.

Thats why it is like it is.

Again, it can definitely be made clearer. But it’s presented as is for a good reason.

This is mostly true if we’re referring to the questing structure of the starting campaign, although BfA was all but linear. But if you bring patches into it, they often tell diverging stories about different characters. E.g. you don’t really need to understand all the stuff with Chromie, Nozdormu, Wrathion and Sabellian in order to understand what’s going on with Amirdrassil. They’re not completely unrelated in the grand scheme of things, but they’re separate dramatic threads. And it makes sense that they’re skippable: having run Dawn of the Infinite has no bearing on the fact that I may defend the world tree.
What I mean is that even when the questing is structured in a linear way, the actual storylines aren’t linear or interdependent. Generally speaking WoW doesn’t have a set group of protagonists that are participating in a single adventure. Instead it tells different stories, from the most mundane to the most important, that take place in a specific zone/time around the main theme of the expansion, involving now these characters and themes, now these other characters and themes. And everything is on a much bigger scale compared to our single characters, so there’s no need for them to get involved in every single one of these stories.

I have my human paladin main and he is working through the campaign quite nicely. I also have a blood elf paladin and he was not doing so well as I’d not really played him at all. So I used the enhanced level 70 boost and whilst it gave him decent gear & renown the storyline and quests make absolutely no sense whatsoever!

There are campaign quests showing up all over the place and loads of stuff to do in the quest journal but it makes no sense logically.

Dare I say that WoW needs to learn from another popular subscription only mmorpg and have what main story quest line and the boosts move you along that line. The other optional side stuff is still there and returning or new players will be more likely to keep with it rather than give up from quest journal overload.

As an answer to OP, sadly Blizzard never made it very obvious which quest belongs to which chain. Personally I follow the order shown on zone storylines or campaign pages on the warcraft wiki if I’m having trouble figuring it out.

Yeah, DragonFlight has story telling issues.
In your quest log it will show you where you are in the current campaign and where to get the next quest.

The problem with DF is that they’ve split the story into several campaigns.
There is the overall Dragonflight Campaign. The Valdrakken Campaign. The Green Dragonflight Campaign and the Dragonscale Expedition Campaign.
There are Story campaigns too. Currently my Paladin is on the Emerald Dream campaign even though it has only done bits and pieces of the main story although my main has done most of the other campaigns (stuck on a couple due to Dungeon quests).

Some of the campaign quests are Renown gated. Some have dungeon quests to complere.
Some have no pre-reqs, such as the Emerald Dream one.

But this is just meeting Shandris and then doing a few quests near the Emerald Dragonflight area inOhanrahan Plains. This will be what is causing you some confusion.
I suggest you look in the Quest Log and see if it points you towards Campaign quests in those mentioned above. Campaign Quests have a shield icon around them. The usual circle icon on most quests show that they are side quests in the main.

They’ve not done the Story telling well in Dragonflight. It’s a mess even for those of us who didn’t take a break.
