What if I’m the raging elitist slob?
You’re asmongold.
I’ve never hated myself as much as now
Personality.
People aren’t watching the popular streamers based purely on WoW being shown on stream. It’s not flashy, it’s not intense. It’s rather dull to play, let alone watch someone else do it.
So your personality is the absolute determining factor on whether you’re successful or not. YOU are the content.
However, if you’re less concerned with WoW and more just having a sustained income from Twitch… Combine a big personality, wit, a little skill and decent business sense with being a sheep for trends (i.e. playing whatever is new and the most popular at any given time). Recipe for success. Avoid doing anything controversial.
Consistency.
If you like to do certain content, do that content the way you want to, but do it consistently. Attracting an audience will take a long time (and you need to be prepared for that).
Over time you will hopefully gain viewers that like the way you stream, but in order to keep them, you also need to be consistent. Remember, they started following you just because you were that way and they liked it.
Many streamers I previously subscribed to grew out of their original target audience and changed their streams and content in an effort to “keep up”. As a result, the experience changed and I stopped following/subscribing.
I am sure said streamers gained a new audience with the new content, but changing it up again could lead to more drops in the “old” subs.
That was my exact thought when I saw that too.
Maybe not, but you definitely missed the point.
Please refer back to the ‘just a fun project’ vs ‘take it seriously’ parts - the things that differentiate between someone actively seeking to build an audience and doing what they can to grow it faster (vs) someone who is content with what they made donkeys years ago and letting it do its own thing in the present (which is me).
I don’t need telling how little my numbers mean in the grand scheme of things. They were not conveyed as a brag and I know exactly why mine is the way it is. They were conveyed to emphasize that, yes, time is an aid, but things mostly boil down to actual work. I could do the same for my own but I left that a long time ago to pursue other dreams.
Having said that, when the foundations are set (even on ancient low-efforts like mine), you can still make something that organically grows. Unfortunately, this is harder for Streamers because… Well, they have to stream, obviously, though you can still achieve it by utilizing other media if you’re prepared to pitch in.
With that said, let’s not mention mine any further. It is a done and dusted project. Instead, let’s help people build theirs in the present.
