Languages in roleplay

lmao, maybe not all languages where made equal in blizzards eyes :rofl:

Tolkien was a celebrated linguist. It would be extremely difficult to get anyone even nearly as proficient as him to work on the language of a middling fantasy game.

Who needs a new expansion when we can have 12 whole languages, sure the shareholders would understand.

I know back when I was in TCG, we all used KayrChat (I think) for the same purposes and it stopped getting updated somewhere around Legion-ish? And it was really annoying, because that addon was a godsend for exactly this reason. Really happy to hear there are newer addons for the same purposes now.

I do get that there’s the worry over meta-gaming or immersion, but ultimately if you are in public (say, a city) there’s a good chance it’s already low in immersion due to people playing the game and doing their OOC activities, and you can’t really control that.

Having a feature that lets you learn the languages in-game would be awesome though and circumvents this entire problem.

Even having stuff that had basics that obeyed a sort of structure would be nice. Surely there’s A.I. or things like that for that, these days? Rather than just wordmash gobbledegook.

Also;

What they did to Pandaren continues to be a sin I will not forgive them for until it is changed. :angry:

I wonder if something like the language cypher used in FFX-2 would work, where all that was was rearranging the alphabet but making sure that vowels were still other vowel-like sounds with
A = Y
E = A
I = E
O = U
U = O
and then a bunch of jumbled stuff for the consonants.

I so wish they did more with the different languages of the World of Azeroth.

Ever since the patch where horde and alliance are linked up I’ve found myself unable to speak the actual dwarf language in any chat box unless I leave the raid/party group and it sucks. I love having my character going off on a tangent in their own language with everyone going ???

I have no qualms about adding [dwarven] as it were, but it does take a little bit out of the immersion. - That being said, people ought to switch over to allow others to partake in the RP, always.

[Thalassian]-posting is unrelenting and unpleasant, and there’s nothing worse in RP than being a Forsaken or an Orc surrounded by Blood Elves gossiping in Thalassian and you just sit there OOC twiddling your thumbs. RP’s all about collective enjoyment and people need to remember that.

But also, I think everyone should be defaulting to Common anyway.

If I have to guess why Blizzard wants to avoid that, it’s because they developed this setting in such a way that every race is a big mono-culture. Every race has its own little bubble which it doesn’t really step out and that no other race steps inside of. The only major exception to this that I can think of is Garrosh stealing goblin technology developed by Blackfuse in order to form the Iron Horde.

This also applies to languages. I guess Blizzard feels that it helps solidify racial identity and helps every race feel like its own exclusive club. It doesn’t help that some fans really like having an exclusive club that they incorporate into their identity, such as the legendary night elf posters of BFA.

In order to get Blizzard to introduce any language-learning, you’d need to convince them that it wouldn’t diminish any engagement or attachment generated by the exclusivity of that language to its original race.

Blizzard in general doesn’t seem very interested in anything that isn’t constant war and world ending threats. They remembered during BfA that trade routes and international commerce is a thing but at any point before or after that expansion they ignored the very concept – which really doesn’t make much sense if you think about it. Are we to assume no one ever trades with each other and that thus no one ever learns the others’s language?

Please Blizzard, give us RPers some crumbs of worldbuilding!

I miss that night elf maniac on twitter who kicked off constantly about anything regarding Sylvanas or the plight of kaldorei

everyone mentions the night elf posters but nobody remembers the sylvanas loyalists or dark ranger posters

the night elves win yet again :sunglasses:

Nera-who??

I have had the thought myself that it would be a nice feature for RP in WoW to be able to learn other races native languages, however as already stated by others I don’t think it is very likely that Blizzard will ever accommodate something like this.

Bertel here knows a bit of Dwarvish from having lived in Ironforge for several years after the fall of Gnomeregan, and I use the Tongue addon, however if some Dwarf RP’er doesn’t have it installed and speaks Dwarvish Bertel not understanding it is easily explained by the fact that he is nowhere near fluent in the language.
