The Mage Tower is indeed a clown fiesta with how the scaling works, making legacy gear and consumables much stronger than current ones. Which is why I haven’t bothered stepping into it yet.

the new talent system will help you to kill it easily 
From what I have seen from posts on these forums, it looks like the HP percentages of enemies were buffed to compensate for the talents thus far on the PTR.
I have managed to do a few and specs like WW Monk, BM Hunter, Fury Warrior and Vengeance DH are by far the easiest so far. Haven’t been doing more yet cause i’m busy grinding rep. Anyway in my experience so far, most deaths were because of me either having poor timing or not paying enough attention to the mechanics. It’s easy to get into a tunnel vision mode and focus to much on the boss and nothing what goes on around it.
I reccommend all players to get Ravaged seed pot trinket from Emerald Nightmare. This drops from the first boss and any difficulty version is good. So you got 4 chances per week to get it. It has a high drop chance so you will probably get it within those 4 attempts.
I also use the heirloom trinkets from WoD but if you don’t have it, then take the recommended Ghost iron Dragonling trinket.
I can also suggest that changing up some talents might help out. maybe the talents suggested don’t work well for you.

I hope the mage tower challenge will never be easy. It’s one of the only challenges that requires real skill and organization with no boosting possible. it’s hard yes, you become crazy doing 300 tries, but it’s so satisfying to succeed.
Today everyone wants everything, right away, without effort, it’s sad.

Too bad you didn’t do the affliction one. For me, its way easier than destro / demonology. Wlock is my 12th alt and I absolutely suck at it, and I downed affliction within 15 attempts. The strategy of burning the add that chases you, and then using the agony / drain life talent to heal yourself in the last phase made it trivial for me.
If I was good with warlock, I would have killed it sub 5 attempts for sure.
