Hi guys,
I hate it has come to this, but some unfortunate news. My dear, elder cat has had health issues recently, and while I thought he was already on the road to improvement, today his health has again taken a turn for the worse and I’m in shambles after the latest discussion with the vet.
I seldom cancel events, but I feel I’m not in the right headspace to prepare and write for the expedition right now. I wouldn’t be able to provide the experience that the attendees deserve.
I already reached out to a couple of people if they’d like to lead the expedition in my stead, and they both suggested to postpone the event instead. For now, I have to prioritise RL.
Best,
Acro
That’s awful and I’m really sorry.
Real life comes first, of course.
Sorry to hear! Hoping for the best!
RL > RP, always. Best wishes
Look after yourself Arcy.
We’ll be here when you’re back
Very sorry to hear that Acrona.
You take care now.
Thanks everyone here & on the Amirdrassil Discord server for your understanding.
The past few weeks have been so stressful in regards to one of my veteran cats. Now, 17 days since our first appointment, many emergency visits, 6k vet bills and a whole lot of worry later, he seems finally on his way to recovery.
TLDR he developed a sudden and severe anemia and the underlying reason is still unclear, but he seems to finally be on the path of slow recovery.
The long version
Around 21st - 23rd November, I had a feeling something was off, due to the small behavioral changes and then his appetite dropping all of a sudden. Took him to the vet on the evening of 23rd, they did blood tests and ultrasound. They spotted a mild anemia, and I was recommended to buy a food supplement to aid it.
A couple of days later, my gut told me things were worsening. Back at the clinic, my concerns were confirmed—the anemia had progressed, and this time he was prescribed antibiotics.
On November 27th, I got that bad gut feeling again. He was lethargic to the point of stopping grooming himself, and moved so stiffly. His urine then started having a brownish/redish tint, which alarmed me to get him checked again.
Another round of blood tests and ultrasound. At point his hematocrit levels had dropped to the bottom of the chart and they noticed swollen lymph nodes and fat in the ultrasound. The situation was now critical. He was immediately admitted to emergency care, his antibiotics were switched, and he was started on cortisone and IV fluids.
He stayed in emergency care for 2.5 days and required a blood transfusion. That’s when we discovered another challenge—he carries a rare antigen that makes him incompatible with most feline blood donors. This was spotted through several failed crossmatches with the blood of other cats. Due to his condition, the clinic resorted to a canine blood transfusion which I didn’t even know was possible. While this works temporarily, canine red blood cells only survive a few days in a cat’s system (compared to about a month for feline cells), and a repeat transfusion is not an option as his immune system would quickly develop antibodies against canine blood.
In case he’d require another blood transfer during his treatment, my evenings were largely spent searching for potential cat donors online, scouting for any of his relatives and cats from the same breeder that share similarities in their bloodline, in hopes we might find a cat with a matching antigen. Unfortunately the closest relatives were either gone, or too old to be considered as donors, and adding to my cat’s bad luck he had been the only kitten of his litter, so there weren’t any sibling offspring to consider either. Despite the odds, kind strangers came forward for our help, and we tested 12 cats. Unfortunately none were a match.
You can probably imagine my stress at this point. His prognosis was uncertain, and his hematocrit levels (the percentage of red blood cells in the blood) were grim—14.1% at their lowest, rising to 29% after the transfusion. Normal ranges for cats are around 30-50%.
Last Thursday the hematocrit was 20.7%, at which point the canine RBC were presumably gone. If the treatment was effective, the values were expected to be higher at this point.
External laboratory tests for the suspected underlying causes all came back negative, leaving the vet to prescribe chemotherapy pills as the next step.
As if this wasn’t enough, his immunity system compromised, he also caught a bad cat flu during the emergency care. He was so clogged he had to breath through his mouth for days, and I tried to unclog him with nose spray and steam baths a few times a day for temporary relief.
Sleep became a scarcity for us both around this time; during his illness, he developed the habit of sleeping next to my head and grooming my face at all hours. He also became unusually restless and vocal, as if constantly pleading for something I couldn’t provide. I read through the side effects of all the medicine he was on for matching symptoms, and the appetite stimulant Mirataz turned out to be the culprit, causing the disorderly behaviour. I discontinued it last Friday.
Finally by Saturday, there was some improvement. His flu symptoms began to ease, he became calmer yet more curious and attentive. Today’s blood tests confirmed progress - not dramatic, the line was going up instead of down. His hematocrit has risen to 24.8%. He’ll continue medication in the coming weeks, and I hold on to the hope that this sweet 11-year-old gentleman has many, many more years ahead.
Please send your best wishes and keep your fingers crossed for Sulho.
While our situation is unique due to his antigen and bad luck, I wrote the long version in hopes it might help others look out for signs of anemia in their own feline companions, and how it can rapidly turn critical if the underlying cause isn’t found.
One possibility in our case is that this situation could’ve been triggered by the vaccination that he received on 11th November, somehow bolting his immunity system to attack his own blood cells. One of the vaccines was of type he hadn’t received before.
Bless you and your cat. Hope you still have many long and warms years left with him!
Thank you.
I’ve been editing the post to add more information, such as it being possible that a recent vaccination somehow triggered his immunity system to attack his own red blood cells. This in hopes that just maybe, the long version might some day help someone else to catch their cat’s severe anemia in time, to asap find a treatment that works.
Some signs of rapidly progressing anemia:
increased tiredness, social disinterest
strange new behaviour (e.g. in our case, lying down next to the water bowl between drinking, and resting in unusual places)
increasingly stiff walk
loss of appetite
stops grooming themselves (due to lethargy)
pale gums
urine turning brownish/redish color (I only noticed this one thanks to the streaks on his white fluffy rear)
Trust your gut when things feel off - I took him to the animal hospital 3 times in short duration for blood tests and ultrasound before they took him into emergency duty, and started intravenous medication right away as the severity of the situation dawned on them. Feared I’d lose him all of a sudden, and that could’ve been the case had I waited until the next morning in hopes that the first antibiotics just needed more time to work. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
I’ll make a new thread for the expedition event if I have the energy to make it happen next year, my thoughts are very much still on how my guy is progressing each day.
