Night elf gender roles in RP

I remember a guild claiming Darnassus and actively went about, against Tyrande’s law, attacking roleplayers who used arcane, light, fel or any forms of magic that wasnt Elune or Druidism.

Does this mindset really make sense in 2023, though? I feel like the Alliance and Horde have taken in so many ‘outcast’ classes and races.

I think so, yes. From what I recall the DM wasn’t without faults, and for example tried a lot to control what was allowed and what wasn’t, to the point he “punished” the guilds of the Alliance for doing what they did best: betrayals and backstabs (which caused plenty of backlash) because between you and me (and everyone else), these kind of intrigues are fun! I don’t remember the details tho.

I have mixed feelings about this bit. While it is definitely true in theory, and in many ways I see a long-living hub something more important than a short-lived RP campaign, it is also true that these zones are a shared space in which people should be able to do their own thing.

I’m not sure how the DM approached the guilds in Feralas and told them “hey, how would you feel about me having an event here?” - definitely there may have been players who didn’t want to have anything to do with it, and players who may have tagged along, but it’s also true that when it comes to hubs, their organization is somewhat spontaneous rather than hierarchical, so it’s hard to simply contact those who “run” things there.

It doesn’t help that, indeed, the community is somewhat insular. I’ve tried to contact the night elf community when I wanted to make a few events in Feralas and I must say, it was extremely difficult for me to even get a reply.

I have no idea about that myself. It wouldn’t be beyond Argent Dawn, but it does feel very petty.

But surely if the event is small, you needn’t have to take the time to ask. Of course, your being considerate, but still.

Using Dire Maul, Isildien or any of those places are perfect for anyone’s roleplay campaign/story.

Back in 2014, I was part of a blood elf illidari guild and we used both the aforementioned and I don’t think the GM contacted anyone from the night elf community.

Definitely but what I wanted to do wasn’t an event in Feralas, but an event with the people of Feralas. Oh, well! It is what it is.

Yes, it still makes sense. The view might have eased off since Illidan and his squad helped defeat the Legion, but that doesn’t mean it would or should have disappeared entirely.

That’s what I do, exactly for the reason of not excluding players. Or rather, I use the RP Prefix addon to automate it.

Dunno if it does. The Alliance has taken in people who’ve committed far worse things, such as Death Knights and Highborne and Void Elves.

Night elves in Astranaar or Feralas aren’t the Alliance. The Alliance isn’t a monolith of shared values and ideology. As a whole, it is permissive of death knights and void elves. The night elven leadership permitted the return of the Highborne (and had an entire story about how a traditionalist began murdering them).

Individual characters or groups are under no obligation to be accepting – they would be law-breaking to attack or kill these people, presumably, but that isn’t the same as being mandated to be accepting.

The Illidari are still a faction of volatile, ends-justify-the-means half-demons. They’re still the antithesis of what mainstream night elven society stands for. A necessary evil, but not a liked one.

The Alliance as a general thing might have yes, but that doesn’t have to reflect individual groups within the Alliance. It is after all an Alliance, not a united kingdom under a single banner.

Demon Hunters are also more specific to night elves rather than the Alliance as a whole.

Edit: Loras beat me to it with alot more points.

Like the void elves too in that case.

The Illidari were also a major player when it comes to disrupting the balance of things.

There weren’t demon hunters at that moment, not aside from Illidan (I think?) but the attempt to flood Northrend and the battle between night elves and illidari is very much canon.

Illidan himself has often made dangerous bargains with demons for the sake of power, and while he usually had the interest of Azeroth in mind, he always had a “thirst for magic” and power that he needed to placate.

Which is why I do want to get into night elf demon hunter role play.

Being able to play a necessary evil, but not a liked one is something that is interesting to have within the alliance.
I mean, let’s face it - the current writing team can’t write anything outside of humans (as far as Alliance goes) so it falls to us roleplayers to make the Alliance more interesting

Even a united kingdom isn’t going to have a totally united people, speaking from personal experience :^)

Cant even get Londoners and Mancunians to like each other.

Just like New Zealand and what they call Aucklanders. (JAFA - Just another f’in Aucklander)

Was it really that long ago…?

It was.

Time certainly flies by…I do miss that guild. Made good use of Shadowmoon Valley and the Warden’s Cage.

The Night Elves went through an extinction event ( well, another ) during which it can be assumed that Demon Hunters, alongside other Alliance forces, helped push the Horde out of Darkshore. It’s also been some 7 years since then. I just don’t see it.

It’s weird to me to still be hateful towards your own kin when you just went through a genocide. When Blood Elves got nearly exterminated most of them didn’t care about Warlock-like magics being used to keep them afloat.

Their first, second, and third almost genocides were demon led, sooooo. The War of the Ancients, War of the Satyr, and Third War, to be specific.

You’re welcome to think it’s weird — that’s totally fine. What it’s also is valid based on the established lore of the setting.

Night elves live for centuries, seven years is a blink of an eye.

Lastly, the blood elves did care. The reason why Kael’thas and his representative (Rommath) didn’t tell the populace about the power-source of the Burning Crystals that enabled Silvermoon to function is because they would freak out over it. Elves don’t like demons.

Logically, you might be right that it’d make sense.

Unfortunately, even WoW night elves are illogical, emotional, reckless and downright contradictive creatures, as most mortal/humanoid beings with feelings usually are.

There’s no way of saying which way traumatic events would actually pull the larger society of night elves, we can only speculate. - Though from what I’ve seen in roleplay, it seems fairly evenly split between people who play characters who’s learned to live and forgive, and some who just aren’t.
