Pet Peeve: 'ICly'

You’d think so but that’s not how I’ve ever seen it being used.

In that case, you’d use “–” or “—”.

For example:

“Help me, guards, I AM BEING—”
/me gets punched in the throat.

The -… is redundant and confusing, because it can mean either trailing off or a more abrupt interruption.

Assuming it’s less about these individual functions and rather the simultaenous combination of the hyphen and ellipsis, I understand now.

If I had to conjecture, it probably stems from the relatively vague rules concerning which between em dashes, hyphen (also double hyphen) and whether they should exempt an ellipsis, and vice versa. I don’t know the English curriculum, but the rule I was taught in Swedish is to end any and all sentences interrupted or unfinished with an ellipsis. Given how many other rules translate to English, it’s possible that other bilingual users adapt their own schooling in this case.

Blizzard themselves also use all fairly liberally save for the em dash I think. This might also be a contributing factor.

While I agree with your thinking here, you can achieve the same thing with a single hyphen.

EDIT: BONUS PEEVE! The fact that it takes the average keyboard user only a single keystroke to fill in an en dash (-), but you need an elaborate modifying key combination to produce an em dash (—). As a result, I and others often use an en dash where an em one would be appropriate because it takes too bloody long to write the right one.

Don’t get me started on Oxford commas.

Personally I think Oxford commas are necessary, important, and stylish.

Speaking of stylish, I’ve been ending all of my emotes with this little guy: ¯_(ツ)_/¯

/me shakes his fist at the fleeing bandits. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

ICly dabs on-…

I icly clown on op

If in a non-serious-serious-SRS RP, like RPing chil or whatever, I might use ‘…’ to symbolize my character being like “lolwhut” or “err” kinda pause, where you kinda open your mouth like “wat”.

What is an Oxford comma?

The final comma in this quote, if I remember how those work correctly.

noun

  1. a comma used after the penultimate item in a list of three or more items, before ‘and’ or ‘or’ (e.g. an Italian painter, sculptor, and architect ).

I usually just write an emote instead.

Loras stares blankly at Vaxir feels better than ‘…’

I never like encouraging the destruction of language.

I do both, depends how I’m feeling tbf. If I’m feeling comedic i’ll do … but if i’m feeling a tad normal and serious I’ll just put /stare.

I feel like the bluntness of /stare, as they feel your character’s disappointment in their life choices is funnier than ‘…’ really :eyes:

Yea but I find horror movies funny so i’m not exactly normal am i!?

Depends on the horror movie. I love watching bad horror movies for that reason, and the current mainstream ones often make me laugh because of how ridiculous they can be.

Some of the scenes in the Paranormal Activity movies are quite funny, like when people are getting dragged across the floor, or the girl runs face first into the invisible ghost.

Dead Snow 1 & 2 though…

Only horror movie I didn’t laugh at was Final Destination :frowning: Death is scary when it’s… like that. Ok. I don’t like death. idk why I played a giant killer cause death is horrible.

See. I am not normal and use “…” (And ICly)

Thats how they work and they’re important for listing things. If I list off to someone that “I went to my hotel room with two strippers, Hitler and Stalin.” That implies they were the two strippers, which they weren’t. But if I use the oxford comma and say “I went to my hotel room with two strippers, Hitler, and Stalin.” This conveys that me and the boys had a time that on paper sounded good but in reality did not.
