Pet peeves: The return (Part 13)

Counterspell would be more interesting+cooler if it was a mechanic instead of being a singular spell.

Something like

Counterspell.
When a hostile creature casts a spell, you may attempt to counter it with a thematically appropriate spell of your own that has a casting time of one action or one bonus action. Solely for the countering, its casting time changes to a Reaction.

[blah blah spell slot+spellcasting ability check mechanic stuff]

A thematically appropriate spell will typically be one that exists in opposition to the spell being cast - Fireball may be countered by a Cold damage spell, Cure Wounds by a spell that deals necrotic damage or inflicts a curse, Fly by a gravity or earth-binding spell, Bless by Bane, or divination by an illusion or enchantment that tricks the mind and bewitches the senses.

Repeated counterspelling sounds like they’ve just re-invented the defensive spell/dispel arms race of yore but less even interesting.

I was gonna say, 2.e Pathfinder has a counterspell mechanic, but it relies on you knowing the spell being cast.

So if you know Fireball and someone casts Fireball, you can spend an action to try a check to counter the spell.

Counterspell this dispel that. Back in my day we just punched nerds in the throat or backhanded them back to magic school. Catching fire catch these hands https://youtu.be/FeahzYGuIKY?si=pXlqsE6IUw0AMF-G

what if you aren’t in melee range

Flat-footed is fine as a condition but was mostly folded into advantage/surprise so losing it isn’t a problem. Wouldn’t hate it if they brought it back as a way to boost up heavy armour types and nerf the dexterity users, but it’s not really a big deal either way.

Touch AC can remain banished to past editions though. Completely and utterly unnecessary in 5e.

Surely this should be against some kind of universal law of magic. Fireball to the face is okay but we draw the line at assault.

I come from a terrible and dark land where there is no counterspell, but your entire 4th level spells are taken up by Greater Malison, 5th level spells are taken up by Breach, we keep Ruby Ray of Reversal on tap for any Liches and we have a gentleman’s agreement not to use Mislead as it’s fundamentally broken on any sort of Mage/Thief. :dracthyr_shrug:

Imagine this but instead it’s him saying “THAC0…”

Played an AD&D campaign a while ago and our wizard did indeed start play with 1/1HP

For some reason it reminded me of that old meme/story of a Dragonborn Wizard dying at session 1 because he headpated the tiefling who didn’t like being touched, and she bit his hand, rolled a crit, and the Wizard bled out and failed all the saving throws.

Wizard: “Oh well, it seems like I am out of spell slots…” -flings robe off, revealing boxing shorts and the 6-pack Of A Demigod- "I guess this will have to suffice. I cast - FIST!"

As much as sometimes the ‘sequels, prequels and everything else’ of popular films and shows can grow a little stale, I would probably make an exception for seein Denken in his prime.
