That would be 8 though. Damoiselle added a 7.
woops, i didnât see that one.
Changed my team comp on lizard witch to⌠2 witches, 2 crossbows (different builds), one 2h strength and one spear user.
All got hybrid builds!
This one is not really a peeve, but more, a ( potentially funny) observation that I made.
Here in the Netherlands, whenever something appears in the news about covid, and it is later put on Youtube or another place where people can comment, the comment sections are almost -always- swarmed by deniers and antivaxxers. If I were to take that at face value, I would have to believe that nearly everyone in the Netherlands is a conspiracy-theorist and an antivaxxer.
No wonder peopleâs views on reality can become heavily distorted if you read only what you find on the net and stay in your own bubble.
Donât worry its always the same approx. 300 people commenting.
I was actually embarrassed when an American friend told me about a new Dutch word she had heard: " Viruswaarheid." Itâs not a word Iâd like for people to come to mind when they hear my nationality.
About Viruswaarheid
Viruswaarheid literally translated âvirus truthâ are a group of people who are against any measures concerning corona and organise actions against it such as lawsuits and demonstrations/riots. The founder compared having to wear a mask to having to wear a yellow Star of David badge.
Sadly not everyone knows that, hence why probably so many are so easily influenced by what they see on the net.
Oh god no⌠poor friend of yours
Not a Netherlands exclusive thing. Outside of the EU too, as I scroll through social media posts, on things even only tangentially related to vaccines, there is always a majority of comments left by antivaxers.
I myself believe in a responsible approach to vaccines, but these people take it to the extreme and honestly do affect your judgment. They did give me the impression that most people are antivax, so I kind of have to remind myself sometimes that it is a vocal minority.
Antivaxxers are desperate to seem like they are anything other than like five dudes, and platforms like YouTube and Twitter are incredibly easy to make bots for.
Reminder: the best thing to do is to escalate the level of conspiracy - âlmao imagine thinking vaccines arenât safe, I bet this loser believes the moon exists tooâ - and then immediately block them because they arenât worthy of debate and youâd be wasting your time to try.
Thatâs true, however
There is some grim satisfaction in throwing a bit of fuel to the fire and watching them publicly embarrass themselves. Kind of like All Gas No Brakes.
Once youâve argued with one conspiracy theory you can dismantle all of them - because theyâre all obfuscations for antisemitism when you get down to it yes every single one even that one - so at some point all youâre doing is driving engagement and allowing them to spread their idea. Just mock and block.
Thatâs the weirdest part, true. Again, you can watch like 10 All Gas No Brakes episodes and at some point in the video the theorists will inevitably somehow circle back to the jews, completely unprompted.
Ah wait, I forgot the exception of âthe times where the US government did something so completely absurd and/or obscenely cruel that it beggars belief but in fact it did happen and we have documented evidence of that exact thingâ conspiracy theory
of course the moon exists, itâs where we live??? weâre encased in a giant mirror, obviously
welcome to the real world, globehead
Hollow earth gang where you at
Wasnât that a Brendan Fraser film?
I knew he was in on itâŚ
It was but with less wehrmacht.
Time for a weird and over-dramatic take.
Several aspects of society have been dominated by a parasitic monster of our own making. It is the cosmic horror of this century, and the name of this beast is the algorithm. In order to explain why I think algorithms are so scary, Iâll focus on the ones which are pertinent to the topic and that are found in online media.
Once any online platform gets large enough, thereâs too much information to be handled by humans without employing an unreasonable amount of people for exorbitant costs. So instead, these platforms turn to coding. They create scripts and algorithms to manage this information for them, to do what any number of human employees couldnât do. More importantly, they get the algorithms to perform their functions in the most profitable method possible.
Letâs take the Youtube algorithm for example. It exists to recommend the right videos to you, to make sure that you watch as much as possible and view as many adverts as possible, to generate as much ad revenue for Youtube as possible. It makes sense, doesnât it? A company wants to make as much money as possible.
The problem starts when people start figuring out what the algorithm is promoting, and how it determines which videos generate the most ad revenue for Youtube. Creators want a cut of that ad revenue, so they try to create that sort of content and follow the algorithm. Unfortunately, the algorithm is a constantly changing thing and as the creators adapt to it, it adapts to them. The audience adapts as well, because if the algorithm is doing its job right, then more people than ever before should be consuming more Youtube videos than ever before, day after day.
And a great way of getting people to consume endless amounts of media is to lead them down ideological rabbit holes. These extremists basically live and breathe and bleed online media, so it makes sense for the Youtube algorithm to create as many of them as possible, as no one consumes as much as they do. This leads to creators feeling encouraged to produce ideologically extreme content, which draws more attention from more ideologues, which skews the algorithm even more.
As a result, Youtube is a breeding ground for extremist opinions - and so is any other substantial media platform thatâs controlled by an algorithm. The algorithms want you to be invested as possible, and they reward creators for making you as invested as possible, and no one is as invested as an extremist. Weâre being radicalized by rudimentary artificial intelligence, all in the name of profit.
Itâs not just limited to online media either, but I will try to avoid straying off-topic.
In short, my pet peeve is algorithms, and these extremists that you see infesting Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and other platforms have probably been radicalized through the algorithm. Have a little pity on them.
