They have been asking for this information for years for account sensitive requests. This includes moving country and account recovery that I know of.
You are not obliged to send them this information but neither are they obliged to perform whatever it is you request of them as stated in the ToS. They require your ID because you have used your real name when creating your account as well as your date of birth. This information is on your ID card and allows them to verify that you are the true owner of the account.
I work for a bank and we require the ID for everything. If clients refuse this then we cannot help them any further. So I understand where blizzard is coming from.

It's not about the picture it's about proving who you are, no doubt something has happened where you need to prove you are still in control of the account. A hacker would not be able to produce this ID.
And, as it says in Nenyasqi's link 'We delete the copy you send us once the ticket is resolved.'
More nonsense and stupidity , i suppose everyone doing a ticket or reclamation not only hacked the e-mail the account is linked to, the credit card and bank account information, the password of the game and also the authetificator in most case, you don t want our finger prints too? A saliva/dna test?

Just be happy that they take your account safety seriously. Blizzard provides by far the best customer service compared to other gaming companies. Regardless of issue they always helped me quick and professionally. The customer support teams also has plenty of training, and know the routines of solving different issues well after the book.
If you played games for a while you probably been in touch with companies like Arena net (GW2) and Funcom aswell. I can tell you Blizzard custom service is on a whole new level than them.

good job you now have given blizzard all information they need to ban you for account sharing.
Allowing any third person (except for a minor for whom you opened the Account) to play on your Account including, but not limited to, using so-called “power levelling services,” i.e. paying a third person for playing on your Account.

Yep mistakes were made you could have gone unoticed but you had to brag you are using someone elses account good job XD now i wish for you to be forgiven for that but i dont know you could have walked away but you had to brag about it.For example i have seen there was a news article about a bank robber he liked a news Article about him on facebook what an idiot but besides the point you could have gotten away with this if you just kept quiet.
