For me it was my son who started it. He went on holiday to the US with some friends. He came back raving about this game that he played while over there then in 2005 he started playing it here when it was released.
We ended up having to keep nagging him to go to bed as he was playing with his US mates. After about 6 months my wife asked about the game, so he created a character for her and she played for a day or so on his account.
After that she bought the game and installed it on the family pc and played from there.
Early 2006 she had an operation, which meant she could not do a great deal. I worked from home to look after her and then installed the game so that we could do something together.
Been here since. We have met people from all over, a number of people from our guild have stayed over and we’ve been to a number of locations on holiday with guild members.
Last laugh, my wife now holds the original account my son used after he stopped playing and discovered females.
I saw someone playing World of Warcraft and next to the character, a tiny kitten was running. That was the moment when I fell in love with the game. I saw it had a huge, open world and it was really multiplayer, not just playing through LAN. I saw another player with an orc character riding a wolf and flying on a bat from flightpoint to flightpoint. Never seen a game like this before. I was amazed.
I was a hardcore guild wars player at the time. A class mate was playing WoW and i was like: pff, my guild wars warrior can sweep the floor of any WoW character at any time .
Then my brother left GW and started with WoW and from there i tried to concentrate on playing GW but couldn’t resist throwing an eye at him playing.
At the end i started to secretly poke my mom that maybe christmas could come early and i started my adventure in december before tbc release.
Have been pretty active since then.
My step-daughter got WoW for Christmas, 2007. During a visit to her home at the end of January, 2008 & I asked her what was that on her PC; she said it was World of Warcraft & let me try it… a few hours later it was time to go home - time flies, etc.
She gave me the “let a friend try the game” code that came with the game back in the day & I installed it on my PC… I was perma-hooked & I got my own full copy for my birthday a few weeks later.
Went over to my friends house after school. (Primary/elementary school days).
He showed me World of Warcraft and i was instantly hooked. I’ve never been caught by anything just by laying my eyes on it as i was by WoW. I guess it was “in me” to always like such games as i did enjoy Runescape daily back then and games like Adventure quest etc.
Thinking back it was truly fun back then considering when Wrath came around, people actually gave my scrubby 11 year old self who barely knew english a chance in their pugs and i cleared up to Plagueworks and felt accomplished as hell!
Nowadays that would never happen. Times were so incredibly different.
