I think it’s caused by (what is sadly still) the perception of women in video games. When a lot of people see a female character, they see them being female as THE defining characteristic of that character, so everyting after that is seen through that lense.
No one does this with male characters. No one is analysing Male Character A talking to Female Character B in an assertive way as “a political move” because Character A is male. The other way around though? You bet people will say something about it.
I haven’t really caught up with the Alliance side story yet - but I really hope Tyrande’s ascension puts her back in charge literally and figuratively.
She is, or at least should be, an excellent character. Still hate her accent though.

Which most people would call “surprisingly even”, considering the medium.
But sure, it’s getting bad, we need more “stronk macho men”.
