Agree to that one, as long as it fits with the narrative, your event of plot!
Err, weren’t others brought back to life during the campaign? The guy who has the Havoc Artifact was definitely killed before.
I would rather say him, the DH PC and Illidan are the only KNOWN ones.
I mean realistically how would Illidan even know how many Demon Hunters actually have demon souls? It’s not like he was in the Nether and could do a headcount while he was there.
Varedis was loyal, Kil’jaeden just tortured him until he broke. But yeah the point is that ‘extremely rare’ here is a term that comes from an unreliable narrator, as Illidan has no way of knowing just how many of the Illidari have immortal souls. He doesn’t have that knowledge.
Unreliable, sure, but also the #1 demon hunter and, very frankly, literally the only NPC source of lore we have on it. I dare say Illi has seen plenty DHs die, that’s a rather major part of the training after all, so his surprise upon seeing the player walking around the nether as a ghosty boy is pretty telling.
But he didn’t go to the Twisting Nether on a weekend trip to see if their souls are there. He literally has no idea if they are still around. The player’s soul is obviously way more hype as they came to life minutes after they died. Illidan needed a lot of things happening to come back.
And Illidan is proven wrong a few quests later when Varedis proves to have an immortal soul as well. So he’s an unreliable narrator and doesn’t state facts, but his own observations.
Pretty much this. I mean it rarely seems to be the case either in Azeroth’s or Our own mythology that Ghosts are people who died peacefully in old age. It is the traumatic deaths, the violent ones, so yeah, they are going to be as they were in death, big bold and -angry-
As to how I treat them, When they hit a character, it isn’t a physical punch, it is a sudden weakness, racing of the heart, dots before your eyes, trembling knees, too much of it (As in, the point where a physical combatant would have bludgeoned you to death) will cause a cardiac arrest, and death.
Hitting them back is trickier. I only DM for Blood Elves so we have two useful skills at our disposal
a)We’re all magical.
b)We can literally Arcane Torrent and just nuke a Ghost.
But yeah, otherwise I’d go with ‘some’ kind of special weapon, or imbued weapon would be needed. I mean the perfectly named metal exists in game ‘Ghost Iron’. Given the prevalence of spirits in Pandaria it makes sense there would be a counter to them.
Ghost’s are weird…
They know what is going on… except when they don’t.
They can be hit… except when they can’t.
They can’t hurt you… except when they can.
