Roleplay Flexibility: Suspension of disbelief within the RP community

Look, don’t tar us all with the same brush, y’hear?

Would be perfectly valid if their insense anti-undead bigotry got their soulmate killed as a lasting lesson and deep loss for character growth but it’s not. Just the usual “I need a healer! No, not you!” routine we must endure.

let me tell you about the dr. house roleplay in the si:7 building…

i recall pissing off quite a few of SWI’s medic roleplay stans because i roleplayed a dude who just healed soldiers with the light and i had no patience for 4 paragraph emotes bandaging a dude in the middle of a huge RP-PvP scene, so all they got was /e heals

I once played a druid in an RP PvP campaign who stood on the side just casting res on people. When prompted I just said ‘nature wills it’.

Lmao this is me as a Vulpera. Almost everyone despises us on the horde and alliance.

Before I even introduce myself, they take one look and say I look “weird” and “rat”

makes you rethink your faction alliances. Might as well be a villain at this point.

I get being wary around races which have a bad reputation, but it should by no means be reflected on random role players who are just trying to Roleplay properly.

I hope to be the one to change the negative stereotype of my race. There are many good Vulpera players out there.

I always believe in giving people a chance until they show themselves they are the cringe stereotype everyone dislikes. Not exclude them beforehand. Truth be told, these are probably also the people that take what happens in Goldshire as being IC. I always go out of my way to tell them that they should not do that as that sort of legitimises them.

i remember someone losing their marbles over magic healing and their argument was something along the lines of “BUT MAGIC CAN ONLY HEAL LIGHT WOUNDS YOU NEED A CHIRURGEON FOR THE SERIOUS INJURIES”

ok bro  go back to final fantasy or something

it’s a concept and mindset that would work better in the setting of final fantasy 14 mmorpg considering there’s surgeons there and there’s some lore behind them

“Only druids can mend bones! Light can’t do it!”
Is another that would appear in this vein.

I’m afraid those are also healing wizards instead of thread, needle and bonesaw fixer-uppers. :pensive:

There’s some traditional medicine in both but for the overwhelming majority it’s magic.
Not really sure why people want traditional surgery et al so badly sometimes anyway because at the same time they want to be up and running within a couple days, a week at most, which doesn’t really click with regular ol’ surgery etc.

i misremembered then, i thought they were actual science medicine people, my bad

if we’re talking about “modern” touches to roleplay that conflict with the vibe of the setting or just flow of roleplay, what grinds my gears is the kind of advanced weaponry people deck their characters there. you’ll see mf’ers with a literal 45.acp colt m1911 because “THERE WAS THAT QUEST IN PANDARIA WITH A MINIGUN ON A PLANE”

or, stop me if you’ve heard this one before, a “magnum” revolver with rounds that can pierce through saronite. alright.

For me personally I’ve enjoyed playing a surgeon/sawbones in a few seafaring guilds for the past few years. I enjoy playing a low-power character, so I never gave him a strong affinity for the light or nature, and I kind of feel like in the case of pirate roleplay the surgeon/apothecary angle just kind of fits the vibe better than menders with more of a magical inclination.

That being said, going for realistic timespans on injuries would be kind of boring for most players I think and I doubt anyone would want to roleplay out a 1-2 year recovery period for an ACL tear with frequent checkups and physiotherapy etc.

Most players anyway, I’m sure there’s some who have a really strong affinity for details but that couldn’t be me tbh

A little note of Blondie’s moments of being “wounded”

  • Having barbed arrows sticking into her chest because she can’t get them out herself
  • Being buried alive and taking a few weeks to crawl back out of the ground again
  • Losing both arms and be forced to get new ones while walking all the way back to Orgrimmar like Monty Python’s Black Knight
  • Being put on fire
  • Being pushed off a cliff (multiple accounts)
  • Getting shot
  • Having a sword stuck into her and running away with it as free loot
  • Being eaten alive and spit out again because of corpse taste bad
  • Trampled
  • Light Smited (She doesn’t like that)
  • Having the shoot be kicked out of her
  • Losing her prosthetic jaw
  • Drinking a can of Termite Killer and feeling a bit weird and the world being “a bit colourful”

And never she made a drama out of it once, because she knows she had it coming to her.

If someone pulls that on me I’ll go full lara croft and whip out dual weilded fel-powered deagles, backflipping my way out of harm’s way in a supreme act of mutually assured RP destruction.

Undead ftw. Power move.

I think this is also a legit struggle related to fantasy and low fantasy: the desire to have one’s character be a meaningful presence in the world of Azeroth but on the other, to respect the canon lore.

It’s not always easy to merge these two aspects of role-play, but I also see meaningfulness ought to be found in different places than “I’ve dealt a massive blow to the Horde and they will never recover! I am so good!”

Perhaps you could create your own Warlord of the Horde, a powerful leader who will be the bad guy for your campaign or event, and will be killed (or defeated) by the end of it.

It’s theoretically speaking a massive blow to the Horde, but nothing that they won’t recover from, as the canon lore proceeds as it ought to.
