At lot is already said about addons and macro’s, so i hope you can find some nice people (communities/friends) who give you the chance. Have fun on your healing journey
I dont know how to reply to multiple people at once, so sorry if you touched upon a similar aspect and I did not reply l.
I did, I leveled my shaman mainly by using dungeons. Yet they are usually so easy that it doesnt require any healing. Same thing happened in the endgame with heroics and timewalking(both raids and dungeons). Then after stepping into M0 my teammates hp is constantly jumping between 40% and 100% of health with almost nothing in between. Not to mention encounters such as the damn frog from HoI where it seems like I have to dispel, heal and run away from frogs at the same time.
I use clique, but I didn’t manage to make vuhdo anything more than hideous default raid frames. Maybe healbot will appeal to me more?
My friends quit wow either for financial reasons or due to the lawsuit.
You can mark the text by holding your left mouse button(or tapping and holding on mobile) then clicking on quote (:
Just try different ones and see what you like most. I started out with healbot back in tbc, but these days i use clique combined with the elvui frames.
So you have a shaman That’s cool.
Healing wise; clique binds 1: riptide, 2: healing surge, 3 chain heal.
Also bind dispell somewhere and something like ascendance and asteral guidance for cooldowns.
Just press all the time 1 and then 2. When a bit healing is needed just 1 and 2 (and sometimes 3) through it, when more healing is needed press a cooldown. Don’t make it harder on yourself at start
Clique is the crucial addon for me. I do all my targeted healing through mouse clicks and click+modifier keys, like so: https://i.imgur.com/zF3Q3pv.png
Purify is on an extra mouse button next to my RMB. This is not necessarily the most efficient approach, but that’s how I have been healing since the vanilla days when Clique was called CastParty.
Healing CDs (Healing Tide Totem, HST/CBT, etc) I have on either extra mouse buttons or keys. Everything offensive, except interrupt, as well as other totems, is on keybinds, except Thunderstorm, which is bound to mousewheel-tilt.
So, right, having a mouse with additional buttons helps a lot. I use a SteelSeries Rival 500, but that one is no longer manufactured (when I found out, I bought two spares in clearance sales!). It’s a bit unfortunate that I got so used to an unusual button layout. The only other mouse I know with a similar layout is the Corsair Darkstar, but that’s a €170 mouse.
Lots of people use the more common MMO mice with the 12 mini side buttons, like the Naga, Scimitar or the G600, but those tiny buttons have never worked well for me. I really need a tiltable mousewheel too.
None of this is required, though. It’s probably better to get the hang of mouse-over macros for healing and using keybinds. This way you won’t get dependent on a specific mouse.

Run normal dungeons with followers. Followers are terribly bad and undergeared, so you’ll need to heal them often.
-
Complete pandaria proving grounds as a healer. I’m not 100% sure that it works now, but I think it should work. In the past it was a good introduction to healing.
-
Use CC in dungeons. That helps a lot. It’s much easier to kick or stun dangerous cast than to heal the consequences.

Never admit that you’re new to healing, etc. You’re making yourself a target this way. There are very few good players in M0 or low M+ keys right now. Most of them are bad and they need someone to put the blame on.
If group is properly geared and does everything correctly, you won’t actually need to heal much in M0. Most of big damage sources are avoidable. So you should understand that while you might not be the best player in the world, rest of your party probably isn’t either. Your mistakes are just more visible or so it seems.
Also you might want to install Details addon and look at Deaths tab. This way you can easily find out why someone dies and then analyzing dungeon guides you’ll probably find out that it was avoidable cast and not your fault.
Also I’ve found discord group recently: nopressureeu
you might want to check it out.
Some people suggest you to use healing frames addons. I just want to highlight the fact that it’s perfectly possible to use built-in unit frames (just use raid frames for party setting) for successful healing. Which one to use is up to you, but modern WoW UI is very advanced and configurable compared to the past, so many addons are not strictly necessary.
One reason is because I want to use support spells with mouse-over, like heals or dispells and harmful spells with target, like kicks or damage abilities. Unit frames are relatively static, so I can confidently use mouseover with precise control. At the same time, nameplates and enemy units are constantly moving around, so I can’t be sure that my kick won’t go to the wrong mob which just moved under my cursor while I was pressing the key.
Another reason is that healer abilities are so bloated, that I basically forced to combine multiple abilities into one button. I have over 40 abilities that I need to key bind and I have around 20 keys accessible with my hand. And I hate using modifiers for that, so I avoid them whenever possible.
Of course that’s my personal preferences and other people will play differently.
The proving grounds are nice in that it’s probably the only place in the game that will properly tell a healer to use their dispel (except maybe the adventure guide but we know how often people read that).
Interrupts and dispels are something that really lacks in any kind of tutorial in the game. Seems like wow expects players to just learn it on their own somehow.
Finding the healer UI that best suits you is a process on its own. IMO its annoying to look for the one, but once you find it you will see an instantaneous improvement in performance.
Think of this as practice.
Its the way M+ dungeons work right now. Its not like it gets any better at higher key levels. Its the healer mini-game.
But a word of advice : Dont stress. When people drop to 40%, you don’t always need to heal them back ASAP. And people don’t always need to be at 100% all the time.
Dangerous places are trash packs because people don’t interrupt / step on swirlies. But the not-so-dangerous parts are the bosses. Because you know when the damage will come, and how much time you have to heal people back.
Every boss has some “tech”. Some strategy that makes life easier.
Frog boss with a shaman : (A) Dont be in Narnia. Be in melee range, so the frogs spawn next to the boss. You got Earthbind totem. It helps. (B) THEN leave melee range and just run around the boss in circles. Use Cap Totem as well to keep them in place.
To heal that, move… cast heal… move… cast heal… and you should be gucci.
There are always strats to heal bosses. And a word of advice : The “pros” and “streamers” don’t always have the correct answer. So if you youtube something, always have in mind that they play in a premade group. With discord coordination and with BiS/Max ilvl gear.
Check out this build :
BgQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQkEJJpkgCJtkQBSKBBlkQEg0SCICSSkESLA
This RShaman build has the least amount of buttons. The least amount of stuff you have to worry about. And max throughput.
All you have to do is put healing rain, riptide, healing surge and chain heal. Thats it.
And spam click Healing Stream Totem for the win.
DONE.
Or this build, that is even MORE zero maintanance :
BgQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAQkEJJRCKElkIlgkSQQJJEBItkAigkEJh0C
This one is just Healing Rain, Riptide, and Healing Surge. Nothing else other than spamming the Healing Stream Totem.
Both of those builds should be more than enough for the content you do. And allows you to focus on whats important. You can add complexity afterwards.
Yeah, it does, we’re just overgeared so they’d have to go far into endless mode to feel any difficulty.
The funny thing with healing is that a lot of bad players will die to their own mistakes and promptly blame the healer for their death being none the wiser that their death was completely preventabe by themselves alone.
Another funny thing is that there’s is a pretty wide range of keys where players are quite bad at making sure they aren’t taking excessive avoidable damage. If you stick to healing and manage to work your way up to higher M+, you’ll notice that the healing gradually gets easier as you get to group up with better players. Often, this counterintuitively makes low levels of M+ harder to heal than anything around +10. You’ll notice a tremendous difference when playing with people who don’t stand in crap, use their interrupts and CC to stop casts, and use their defensives properly, to the point that you barely even have to heal at all most of the time.
As for learning, it really is all about playing and learning the damage patterns. As you play more, you’ll memorize where and when damage is coming, so you start making sure you have cooldowns and heals ready for those instances.
Are you using WeakAuras? If so, this is what I use on my resto shaman: https://wago.io/j0FKELQ-W
Of the resto shaman WAs I’ve tried, this is by far my favorite.
I have a couple extra ones to track HST/CBT and Riptide (more visibly and color-coded): https://wago.io/e53XXoD1b
and https://wago.io/GS78fe3WI
.
I once got laughed at by using healbot. I was like ‘dude I’m keeping you alive who cares how I do it
’
But seriously I’ve used it for so long I don’t think I can heal without something like it.
Yep, lucky I have details to show them they should have moved out of the swirly. I often want use the phrase ‘I can’t heal you from stupid’ but I swap in ‘one-shot’ for stupid if I want to be a bit more polite hehe.
You are not alone. I use VohDu…
People were shocked when they saw me with the base UI. Long as it works, who cares, right? They stay alive and get the occasional 20% haste buff
That made me chuckle thanks xD
but goodluck on the journey forward
You learn it by doing M0 to M+5 keys, nothing that challenging about them with decent group.
Nothing is challenging with a decent group. The challenge lies in finding these groups
