You’d jump between stances to use different abilities depending on the situation. Stance dancing.

Warrior had stances and some abilities only worked in those stances, so you switched back and forth
That was intentional though 
In Classic and up to uh… Cata? Many warrior abilities could only be used in one of three stances. Battle, Defence and Berserker.
You had to ‘stance dance’ to flip between certain abilities and to either reduce damage taken or increase damage dealt, yadda yadda.
I think in Cata they changed them so all abilities could be used in any stance. Then stances went RIP altogether.
