Interestingly, as the Romans had a passion for copying Greek Gods and mythology and giving it a Roman flavour the Greek god of the forests was called Phaunus who the Romans changed to Faunus.

Hence the Latin term, “fauna”,

But what is most interesting bout the usage of Roman versions of Greek gods and legends is how the original Greek have long been overshadowed by their Roman cousins.

If we take for example Hercules, Ulysses (Ancient Greek heroes) and of course the Gods, Jove/Ju[iter, Juno, Minerva, Venus (I could list them all but will spare the wall of text I will list the well known one’s below) it’s not just the names are changed, the virtues are changed as well. For example, the Greek God of War, Ares, was seen as a blight upon mankind, whereas the Romans venerated their version Mars. It should also be noted that The Romans while quite happy to use Greek deities and mythology, were quite happy to change it to suit their cultural differences between Greece. A classic example is, of course, the poets Homer and Virgil (and Dante who I shall also discuss) and their works The Iliad and the Aeneid.

(Disclaimer. For this purpose I strongly suggest the reader takes the time to read both works after this, and not just base their opinion on the movie Troy, which was garbage)

In the Iliad, written by Homer, it describes not only the last few days before the sacking of troy, but also shows the Wars of Olympos, I feel at this point I should also draw attention to how the ancient greeks tend to write their male heroes with their name ending in “os” unless it was softened to “us”. Therefore modern usage of heroes such as Menelaus, Telemachus would in Greek be written as Menelaos and Telemachos. Other names were not so much changed as completely rewritten, Paris of Troy, was written in the Illiad by Homer as Alexandros. The differences while seeming insignificant, are very evident of how modern-day usage has taken the Romanized versions as the norm. If we take the time to examine the Illiad further, often it spends a lot of time describing the conflict on Olympos (Olympus Romanized) between the gods. Zeus himself did not pick sides but he did interfere as he saw fit, most notably in the case of Achilles who he had promised to Achilles’ mother Thetis that he would bring her son great glory before he would die. Favouring the Greeks we have Hera, Athena, Poseidon, Hephaestus and Hermes were allies of the Greeks, while Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, and Artemis were allied with the Trojans. In the Aeneid, written by the Roman Poet Virgil, he changed the virtues of the Greek Gods to suit the Roman culture and although the Romans had already changed the names, it was not until the time of Virgil that the widespread shift of culture became prevalent.

It is also worth noting that the Romans held themselves as descendants of Aeneas of Troy, who was prophesized that after the defeat of troy would travel West past Greece and to go on and found the greatest empire the world would ever see. This of course being to the Romans, the Roman Empire. The Greeks knew Italy as we know it now as the Laotian Lands, and this is where after the events written in the Aeneid, (it should be noted that it was Virgil who wrote of the Wooden Horse of Troy and its subsequent fall, The Illiad ends with the Funeral of Hector). After many adventures, and again, this is where the Romans often copied the Greeks but changed it for their culture, Aeneas has adventures much like Odysseus has in the Homer epic The Oddysey, even going so far as to visit Hades as Odysseus does. After his adventures, the Romans believed Aeneas sired the Roman line with Romulus and Remus.

This belief was also a strong narrative with Dante, who of course is led by Virgil through the Inferno and Purgatorio. Dante uses his strong belief that he is descended from the Romans by granting Roman Heroes special privileges in his Inferno. In Limbo with the Virtuous Pagans (Those who led a good life but did not know Christ, therefore they have no hope), Dante writes of how he sees Caesar, Aeneas, and other Roman paragons of Roman virtue. By contrast, in the malebolgia Circles of Fraud, Dante places Odysseus and Diomedes (who he Romanizes as Ulysses and Diomede) as being guilty of fraud. on at least two counts. Odysseus he particularly singles out, first for the stratagem of the Wooden Horse, to some a valid tactic of war but to Roman Culture it signified deceit and cowardice, he is also punished for uncovering Achilles disguise and he is also punished for the theft of a golden goblet from Athena’s temple in troy, the removal of the goblet signifying troy’s fall. Interestingly, Achilles is also placed with the Virtuous pagans, as Dante follows the Roman myth of Achilles, in which he agrees to desert the Greeks and join the Trojans with the hand of Priam’s daughter in marriage. But all myths of Achilles end in the same way, in that he is killed by Paris (Alexandros) by being shot in the heel. Interestingly Dante also places Homer with Virgil and other poets such as Ovid and Lucan with the 5 poets of genius, and rather grandiosely, makes himself the 6th. Readers of the Commedia should look out for those little nuances of Romanized bias.

So what was the point of this wall of text… I can’t sleep and wanted to expand further on Furyeclipser’s point.

and to end, i will list some well-known gods and heroes, and their Greek and Roman names.

Zeus - Jove/Jupiter
Hera - Juno
Hades = Pluto
Persephone - Proserpina (interestingly, she was considered to be more malevolent and hostile to the living who tried to enter Hades.
Athena - Minerva
Poseidon - Neptune
Apollo - No change
Hermes Ageirophontes - Mercury
Hephaestos - Vulcan
Aphrodite - Venus
Ares - Mars
Artemis - Diana

Some notable heroes.

Heracles - Hercules
Alexandros - Paris
Oddyseus - Ulysses
Diomedes - Diomede
Aias - Ajax

Far as I am aware heroes such as Theseus and Perseus have the same name in Greek and Roman, although their stories, especially Theseus, underwent a cultural change. For example, most people will know of Theseus and the Minotaur, but in his very Grecian life (which the Romans were disparaging of) he tried to abduct Persephone and marry her to his cousin. For this, his cousin died, while Theseus was punished by being kept captive in Hades until he was freed by Heracles. Dante mentions this tale in his Inferno, when in his journey in the Inferno he is accosted by the Furies who declare “Send for Medusa, too lightly we let Theseus go free” the reason given being that if mortals were punished more severely they would stop invading the underworld. Virgil shields his eyes to stop Medusa turning him into stone.

This thread has it all: Rule34, Greek mythos, Warcraft history lessons, sexual innuendo, a furry, a gnome.

I just won forum bingo for the day.

What? Sylvanas played a huge role in the Frozen Throne expansion. From retaking Lordaeron, dealing with Garithos and shaking up the Dreadlords. You barely played as Arthas.

Imagine asking people on the wow forums to read books

Hunters? Balanced??

Hunter scaling is bad.
It’s far more linear than some other classes, which means you get to demolish things in scaled content (leveling/timewalking), but when it gets to high end gear, you’re not getting too much juice out of your ilvl.
Unlike, say, Rogue, which in timewalking does pitiful damage but scales EXTREMELY WELL beyond ilvl ~200.

We had our moment of fame in 9.0, 9.5 saw as sink to the botton, and it will take Blizzard till .2 to .3 patch as always to correct our scaling to be able to compete with other classes.

I don’t care about the insults it’s just the purpose typo that annoys the heck out off me

“barely”. Ye i guess playing him in 2 campaigns counts as “barely” while sylvanas at best appeared in some missions. Not to mention Frozen Throne ending with Arthas becoming Lich King but hey.

Minor role as i said. Lordaeron was of nobodies concern (and that only worked because of Illidan weakening Ner’Zhul and by that Arthas). Shaking up the dreadlords only worked because the Legion was dealt with and they werent aware (not to mention she never got Varimathras to obey her, which resulted in the siege of the undercity in wotlk). Also Garithos was nothing more but a fat racist that held no meaningful power.

Hahaha this had me laughing so much.

I believe the correct spelling is Mary Selvyounos.

No insults directed towards you. Just towards Sylvanass. The typos though are intentional and will remain
